Arizona Football loses a Gunnell, gains a Gunner Cruz
Over a month into his tenure as head coach and Jedd Fisch has his quarterback, Washington State transfer, and Arizona native, Gunner Cruz.
It has been a busy few weeks for head coach Jedd Fisch and the Arizona Football and staff as they have done a tremendous job in finalizing the 2021 recruiting class. Their latest addition perhaps one of their biggest, as Washington State quarterback Gunner Cruz, committed to the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
Making his announcement via Social Media, Gunner tweeted that he is “Coming Home” with the hashtag “It’s Personal”. And for Gunner, it will be a homecoming of sorts.
Arizona Wildcats
Originally rated as a three-star quarterback in the class of 2019, Cruz was a standout at Casteel High School just up the road and held numerous, except Arizona.
Committing to the Cougars out of high school, Cruz spent just two seasons in Pullman. Redshirting in 2019, Gunner saw limited action last year, appearing in one game, a 38-13 loss to USC.
In that game against the Trojans, Gunner completed just five passes on seven attempts for 34 yards and a touchdown.
His future even looked promising too. That is until Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano decided to transfer in, burying Gunner further on the depth chart.
Luckily for us, it didn’t take long for Gunner to decide he wanted to transfer and know his destination in the process.
Cruz comes in at the perfect time for Arizona too. His addition helps to alleviate the losses of Grant Gunnell to transfer and 2021 quarterback Clay Millen to de-commitment.
At 6-feet-5-inches and roughly 212 pounds, Gunner is a big and talented kid that will provide immediate depth at the quarterback position. Because of his collegiate experience, he will have a legitimate shot at competing for the starting spot with the Cats and at worst elevate the level of play by providing more competition for Will Plummer and Kevin Doyle.
Overall, I do like his talent and ability and think he will fit Fisch and Arizona’s offensive playstyle. Plus, you got to appreciate the fact that Gunner does possess some in-game experience.
