After leaving Monday’s game with an ankle injury, Arizona Basketball freshman Ben Mathurin should bounce back quickly for the Wildcats.

It was a good win for Arizona Basketball on Monday evening however, it didn’t come without a bit of a scare as star freshman Ben Mathurin went down in the first half with an apparent ankle injury.

Chasing ASU guard Remy Martin to the other end of the court, Mathurin went up to try and make a play on the basketball but came down awkwardly and hobbled off the court. Mathurin never came back in.

In a rare season in which the Wildcats won’t be playing for an NCAA Tournament bid, the Canadian Native and freshman star has been a pleasant sight for Wildcats fans. In the 15 games he’s appeared in, Mathurin is averaging 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Very much a throwback to the early Sean Miller years, Ben embodies the competitive, Arizona spirit. So naturally, seeing him go down on Monday was concerning to fans, to say the least. Luckily, it seems the injury is fairly minor.

During the game, the Arizona Basketball program announced that Ben had suffered an ankle sprain. Letting out a collective sigh of relief, we can now rest easy at the good news.

The only thing is, we still don’t know how severe the ankle sprain is. Depending on whether it is a high ankle sprain or not, Ben’s timeline of returning is still undetermined. At this time, I would assume his status is day-to-day and is questionable at best for their game against Stanford on Thursday evening.

Either way, we can just be thankful that Ben didn’t suffer a more severe injury and that he will be back sooner rather than later.

On the plus side, Arizona should finally have freshman Kerr Kriisa next week as he becomes available, and luckily, his broken nose won’t impact his availability either.

At Zona Zealots, we’re just glad the injury wasn’t more severe and would like to wish Ben a quick and speedy recovery. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
