Arizona Baseball is eliminated from CWS in Stanford route
OMAHA, NE – It was a tough day for Arizona Baseball as the Wildcats were eliminated from the College World Series following a 14-5 loss to Stanford.
Arizona Baseball got seven hits and scored five runs, but it ultimately wasn’t enough as they were overpowered by Stanford as the Cardinal exploded for 20 hits and 14 runs in their route of the Wildcats.
Coming in, it was a win-or-go-home scenario as the Wildcats and the Cardinal squared off in an elimination game in Omaha at the College World Series.
Arizona Wildcats
Turning to Garrett “Gary” Irvin in game two, the Wildcats’ ace was hoping to see a bit of a return to his early postseason dominant form, however, unfortunately, Stanford would jump on him early and often.
Getting through the first and second innings unscathed, Gary would then run into trouble in the third inning when the Cardinal exploded for seven runs in the inning. Getting hit after and after hit, Gary would eventually get pulled in the middle of the third, being replaced by Chandler Murphy.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn’t stop the bleeding, as the Cardinal exploded for three more runs in the fourth to make it 10-0.
Desperately needing runs, Arizona Baseball would make a valiant effort in trying to come back, but it ultimately wouldn’t be enough in this one.
Down by double-digits, the Wildcats would start to try and come back in this one, scoring two runs when Daniel Susac would double to bring in Tony Bullard and Branden Boissiere to make it 10-2.
Two innings later, the Wildcats would use timely hitting to plate three more runs in this one, making it 10-5. However, that is all the offense the Wildcats could muster.
Subsequently, after cutting Stanford’s lead in half, the Cardinal then would explode for another four runs in the following inning, putting this game even further out of reach.
Trailing 14-5 at that point, it was all but over for the Wildcats as they couldn’t muster any office to jumpstart their offense and climb back into this one.
Garrett would pick up the loss, falling to 6-4 on the year, and Susac would lead all Wildcat batters going 2-4 from the plate with two doubles and three RBI’s.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 45-18 on the year and are officially eliminated from the College World Series.
While the loss hurts, the sights now turn to the future and the Wildcats couldn’t have another strong group in 2022.
