LAS VEGAS, NV – Falling just short in their upset bid of BYU, head coach Jedd Fisch is optimistic about the future of Arizona Football.

The Jedd Fisch era of Arizona Football has begun, and after an eventful evening in which the Wildcats fell just short in their upset bid of BYU, there was plenty of optimism following the teams’ 24-16 loss.

It was a hard-fought battle for 60 minutes, and in his press conference after the game, Fisch raved about his team and the effort they gave against BYU.

“Our guys battled hard,” Fisch said. “I think we have a really good football team and I think we have a chance to do some really cool things moving forward and I am excited about that.

And Fisch would be right! Naturally, it would be hard to find silver linings in a loss, especially for a program that is losers of 13 straight games. However, as we all woke up on Sunday morning, collectively, I think most Arizona fans share that same optimism as coach Fisch.

On Saturday evening in Las Vegas, with BYU bolstering the vast majority of fans in attendance, and coming off an 11-1 season, Arizona didn’t make this one easy for the Cougars.

Arizona held BYU to 368 yards and 24 points, all while breaking in a freshman quarterback and implementing entirely new offensive and defensive schemes.

To say this is an impressive start to Jedd Fisch’s career as head coach would be an understatement, and the future of Arizona Football is bright!

“I love our team,” Fisch said. “I learned that our guys are gonna fight till the very end.” And fought they did. Against BYU on Saturday, we saw a Wildcat team that was the antithesis of the previous three years.

Shortly after falling behind 21-3, the Wildcats would pin BYU inside their one on a punt, earning a safety a few plays later. Arizona would then return the subsequent kick-off into BYU territory, which set up a touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion. That series of football in the third quarter was the best I have seen Arizona play in a long time!

Even as Arizona made mistakes last night, coach Fisch felt he has an opportunity to improve as well, telling media “I need to be better”.

And he’s right, this team has a lot of room for improvement, and the overall product will get better week-to-week. Either way, it was a good start despite the loss, and there is plenty to be optimistic about moving forward!
