Key’s for an Arizona Football win against SDSU
Arizona Football (0-1, 0-0) returns to action against SDSU at home, and as the Wildcats enter as a slight favorite, these are the keys for a Wildcat win.
The 2021 season started with a tough loss last Saturday, but the show goes on for Arizona Football as the Wildcats return to action against San Diego State at home.
Coming in, the Wildcats will face another tough matchup against the Aztecs. This is a well-coached, athletic, and physical team, and on again Arizona should expect a battle on their hands.
However, despite being losers of 13-straight (college football’s longest active losing streak), Arizona enters this matchup as slight favorite. Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed in this sport, so the Wildcats are going to have to put together a better performance than they had against BYU if they are going to come away victorious.
With Arizona Football predicted to win against the San Diego State Aztecs, if the Wildcats are to get the win, these are the keys to do it!
Control the Line of Scrimmage(s)
Returning on this second edition of the keys to winning, Arizona will need to control the line of scrimmage(s). Granted, it is a task that is easier said than done, but a big part of this game is going to be how the Wildcats play along the line of scrimmage on both sides.
SDSU has size and athleticism particularly along the defensive side. Arizona struggled last weekend to set the tone early and weren’t able to drive BYU’s defensive line back. As a result, the rushing attack wasn’t too effective, and the Cats gave up several sacks. Arizona’s offensive line will need to get rolling early.
On the flip side of that, Arizona’s defensive line is going to have to find a way to manufacture and generate more pressure. The Wildcats only pressured the quarterback five times, sacking the QB once against BYU. That needs to improve if Arizona is going to win this one.
Set the Edge
We all saw the Wildcats’ weakness on Saturday, and that was being able to set and contain the edge. BYU got to the outside too many times, and as a result, the Cougars gashed the Wildcats on a few longer runs.
With SDSU being a running football team, the Cats are going to have to do a better job in setting the edge and providing containment in those scenarios. If Arizona can get better results here, I like their chances of winning.
Shorten the Field
Arizona did a fantastic job on punts and punt coverage last weekend, which led to nine point for the Wildcats. Against SDSU, I would love to see if the Cats can get close to matching those results.
Play smart with field position, pin the Aztecs deep, and try to shorten the field for your offense to hopefully generate more scoring opportunities.
Red Zone Attack
In short, Arizona was simply atrocious in the red zone last weekend. That cannot happen again if the Wildcats are going to win.
Arizona is going to have to find a way to incorporate their weapons in the red zone, which may ultimately mean, utilizing the tight ends more. The Wildcats have the ability to be a good offensive team, and it starts with being more efficient down in scoring territory.
