Quarterback room a “revolving door” for Arizona Football
With Arizona Football continuing to look for more answers at quarterback, the position is quickly becoming a revolving door for the Wildcats.
The year is quickly moving along as we are now on to week four of the young, Arizona Football season. And after a tough start to the season, the Wildcats will have a difficult challenge as they face off with No. 3 Oregon this weekend.
So far in 2021, things have been rather rough for the Wildcats. Despite entering the season with rather low expectations, Arizona has stumbled out of the gates, falling to 0-3 on the year, including an unprecedented loss to Northern Arizona this past Saturday.
Highlighted in several of the struggles for Arizona Football thus far in 2021 have mostly been their deficiencies on offense.
From inconsistent play at quarterback, to their porous play along the offensive line, Arizona has had more than their fair of struggles on offense.
If Arizona is going to turn things around and become a more competitive and complete group, they are going to need to find answers and quickly, which mostly means solving the conundrum that is the quarterback position.
So far in all three games, the quarterback room has been more like a revolving door as all three quarterbacks have gotten repetitions. First, it was Gunner Cruz against BYU and SDSU, then it was Will Plummer against SDSU and NAU, and lastly, it was Jordan McCloud who came in late against NAU.
With a big-time matchup against No. 3 Oregon looming, head coach Jedd Fisch has one heck of a challenge on his hand as he perhaps looks for another new starter at quarterback.
In his weekly press conference on Monday, coach Fisch still seemed to hint at the idea that Arizona will evaluate the position over the next week or so and hopefully have a clear starter come Saturday. Either way, the options are limited for the Wildcats.
With each player, you have certain strengths, but with that, there are several deficiencies as well. On one hand, you have Cruz who has a lot of good tools but has limited mobility. Then you have Plummer who is a bit more mobile but tends to make his fair share of mistakes.
Lastly, there is McCloud, who looked decent against NAU but also has seen limited action, so the sample size is too small.
Does Fisch turn to McCloud and hope to solve the position with a ‘next man up’ approach? Or, does he turn things back over to Cruz?
Either way, Arizona has a lot of questions to answer, and the hope is Arizona’s revolving door at quarterback soon gets solved.
