Arizona Football to renew New Mexico rivalry in 2024
With Arizona Football beginning to plan for the future, the Wildcats will renew their rivalry with the New Mexico Lobos in 2024.
For those looking toward the future of Arizona Football, fans can begin planning for upcoming Wildcats games, as the program has started to settle its scheduling for 2023 and beyond!
On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced via social media that the Wildcats have added another opponent for 2024 with the addition of New Mexico, renewing an old and bitter rivalry and filling their last open spot for that year.
For those that don’t know, the Wildcats and Lobos used to battle for the Kit Carson Rifle from 1938 to 1990, and during that time it was a pretty intense matchup.
Overall, these two programs have a long history together that dates back to their time spent together in the Border Conference and the Western Athletic Conference as well.
Having met 67 times since 1938, Arizona holds the overall series lead, winning 44 games to New Mexico’s 20, with the two teams having tied three times as well.
However, since then the rivalry has kind of tapered off, as Arizona’s last win came in 2015 when the Wildcats beat the Lobos in the New Mexico Bowl. That was also the last time that the two teams met.
The renewed rivalry brings back great tradition, and an opportunity for Arizona Football to play a relevant, regional game.
Currently, the Wildcats game against New Mexico is set for Aug. 31, 2024, in Tucson, and it will kick off the 2024 season! It also marks the first time that the Lobos faced the Wildcats in Tucson since 2007.
Arizona will also face off with NAU, and at Kansas State that year too!
As for future games, the Wildcats should have a beefed-up schedule with games against Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, BYU, and Alabama among others looming.
