As Arizona Basketball gears up for the upcoming season, the Wildcats could see a much faster, more free-flowing offense with Tommy Lloyd.
The Tommy Lloyd era of Arizona Basketball is officially underway in Tucson as the Wildcats held their first practice for the 2021-22 season on Tuesday afternoon.
Coming into the year, all eyes will be on Lloyd and the Wildcats as many, including us at Zona Zealots, are curious to see how this team will be.
As we are all familiar with by now, Coach Lloyd replaces Sean Miller, who served the previous 12 seasons as head coach of the Wildcats, and he also inherits a talented group that is still impacted by the ongoing IARP/NCAA Investigation.
However, as the longtime assistant has taken over the storied program, the biggest questions surrounding the program the past few months have been what kind of offense Lloyd will run and how will his team be?
Well, following the teams’ first practice on Tuesday afternoon, Tommy Lloyd suggested that Arizona Basketball will likely run a fast, free-flowing offense.
For fans that followed Arizona Basketball during the Miller era, one of the biggest criticisms was his rather slow and sometimes stagnant offense. Running a more methodical system and creating the offense through the point guard, it sometimes was hard to watch, and made for some interesting finishes.
According to 247Sports’ Jason Scheer, Lloyd wants to run a more open and free-flowing system. That means fewer drawn-up plays, and more opportunities to allow for players to use their athleticism and creativity.
For fans that have been longing for an offense that has more freedom and plays with more of an up-tempo style, they will certainly get their wish this season.
With Arizona having several talented athletes, this could be a great thing for the Wildcats, and we are excited to see how everything looks!
