With former Arizona Football head coach Kevin Sumlin being far removed from being the head coach of the Wildcats, he has found a new gig in the USFL.

As we are all too well aware of at this point, things did not go particularly well for Kevin Sumlin as head coach of Arizona Football.

Serving as head coach of the Wildcats from 2018-20, Sumlin compiled a 9-20 record and had an unceremonious end to his tenure as he was terminated shortly after losing to rival ASU 70-7 to close out the abbreviated 2020 college football season.

However, things didn’t necessarily start so tumultuous. Many, including myself, were encouraged by the hiring of Sumlin, albeit some of the encouragement was clouded naivety. After all, he compiled an 86-43 record and recruited at a high level at Houston and Texas A&M before joining the Wildcats.

Fast forward to now, and the Wildcats already have another new coach and fans have moved on either way.

Now as for the former Arizona Football head coach, Kevin Sumlin is onto his next venture, which will have him coaching in the USFL for 2022.

Making news via social media on Thursday afternoon, the Houston Gamblers, a professional football team of the recently created United States Football League (USFL), announced the hiring of Sumlin to be their next head coach.

Sumlin will have a reunion of sorts as he comes back to Houston, after last coaching the Houston Cougars in 2011.

Kevin becomes the teams’ first head coach in its organizations’ history, and he will be a part of the leagues’ resurgence after the USFL played three seasons from 1983-85. Coincidentally, this league has no relation to the previous USFL, only that they have similarities in name only.

As for Coach Sumlin, regardless of our opinions on the porous state in which he left the Wildcats upon his departure, we still wish him well moving forward.
