TUCSON, AZ – Playing in their first home game of 2022, No. 11 Arizona Baseball (3-1) returned to Hi Corbett Field where they were walloped 19-3 by GCU (2-2).

You win some you lose some, and in baseball that is especially true as No. 11 Arizona Baseball (3-1) came crashing back to reality on Tuesday evening following their 19-3 loss to in-state rival, Grand Canyon.

Fresh off a three-game weekend sweep over Kansas State, Oklahoma, and then No. 14 Texas Tech, the Wildcats were riding high as they entered Tuesday night’s home opener.

Turning to left-handed pitcher Eric Orloff, the freshman hurler would be roughed up in one-and-two-thirds innings pitched, surrendering a run on five hits.

He would then be replaced by Tommy Splaine who also faced similar issues, as the Wildcats’ right-handed utility man would last just an inning and a third, surrendering two runs on four hits to fall behind 3-0 early on.

Poor pitching and lackluster defense would be the theme of the night for Arizona Baseball as the Wildcats couldn’t contain Grand Canyon’s bats.

After a stellar weekend where the Wildcats had virtually everything go right, overall, it was not the Wildcats’ day on Tuesday evening as the Lopes scored runs in every inning minus the fourth and fifth innings.

Jumping out to a 6-0 lead after three innings of baseball, unfortunately, Arizona could not recover as Grand Canyon continued their stellar play throughout the game.

Arizona would show some life, plating a run in the fifth inning after a throwing error was committed by the Lopes. The Wildcats would even add two more in the seventh inning when Tanner O’Tremba would single up the middle, plating Kyle Casper and Jack Grant to make it 15-3.

Unfortunately, that is all the offense that Arizona would be able to muster in this one as the Wildcats fell 19-3.

Where does Arizona Baseball go from here?

With the loss, Arizona Baseball fell to 3-1 on the season and will have a little break before returning to action on Thursday when they welcome Milwaukee for a four-game series.
