Following a jam-packed weekend of action, the Arizona Baseball and Arizona Softball teams suffered through some tough series’.
With the Arizona Baseball and Arizona Softball teams ranked in the Top 25 nationally, both squads probably looked forward to their respective series against UCLA and Arizona State. Unfortunately, things did not go the way they hoped, for either team.
For Arizona Baseball, in their first game against UCLA, the Wildcats committed four errors en route to losing 10-2. Though they rapped out nine hits, including two triples and a double, ultimately, the miscues doomed them.
The Cats then turned it around in the second game, limiting their errors to only one and pounding out 11 hits to take the 4-2 win, outlasting the Bruins despite a late-inning rally, where the Cat’s hurlers gave up single runs in the eighth and ninth. Uncharacteristically in this game, the Cats scored all their runs on singles.
With a chance to take another series, the Cats dropped the final game 7-3. The power outage for the Cats continued as they only managed to scatter six singles. However, the Cats remained in second place in the Pac-12 based on their first two series wins.
In a rebound game against Grand Canyon on Tuesday evening, the Bat Cats found their power swings again, belting two homers and a double on their way to a 5-3 win.
With Arizona Baseball falling to UCLA in two of three games, things were much worse for the Arizona Softball team.
The Wildcats remain winless in Pac-12 play as they dropped three straight to the Sun Devils over the weekend, their last two games shortened by the ‘mercy rule’. It was a disheartening performance made even worse, coming as it did, against our cross-state rivals.
In the first game, the Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The only real bright spot for the Cats was a two-run homer by Carrie Sculpin who leads the team with 12 homers and 40 RBIs.
In the second game, the Cats could only scratch out two hits while watching the Sun Devils score 11 times on thirteen hits.
In their third and final game, the result wasn’t much better, in fact, it got worse as former Cat Marissa Schuld threw a perfect game against the UofA and the Devils blasted four homers. As a result of the sweep, the Cats dropped to 19th in the polls down from 15th and the Sun Devils moved up to 16th from 20th.
The Lady Cats better find their bats quickly because they travel to Seattle this week to play the No. 11 rated Washington team.
