Arizona Softball earns second straight Pac-12 series win
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Despite dropping game one, Arizona Softball (27-16, 6-12) was able to come away with their second straight Pac-12 series win.
It was a tough start to the weekend for Arizona Softball as the Wildcats dropped game one against Utah by a 5-3 final. But luckily, the Wildcats were able to bounce back in a big way, beating the Utes in game two and game three to take the overall series.
Once again, Arizona showed its inconsistency this year, as they lost game one with some spotty pitching, surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits.
The Wildcats did follow that up by shutting out the Utes in game two. Devyn Netz was spectacular in that game, holding the Utes scoreless on just two hits.
Luckily, Arizona was able to just hang on to beat Utah in game three. Despite surrendering five runs, the Wildcats’ offense came up big, plating six runs to secure the series win.
However, the bigger story here was that even with their inconsistencies, Arizona Softball picked up their second straight Pac-12 series win in 2022.
Game 2:
Turning to Devyn Netz in game two, the Wildcats’ starter was on fire, arguably having one of her best games as a Wildcat. She would throw a complete game shutout, holding the Utes to just two hits, meanwhile striking out just one batter.
The Wildcats’ bats would be equally as impressive, plating eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, thanks in large part to the efforts of Izzy Pacho and Carlie Scupin who went a combined 3-7 from the plate with five RBIs.
Game 3:
Turning to Netz once again in game three, the Wildcat starter wouldn’t have her best stuff as she surrendered three runs on three hits through three-and-a-third innings pitched.
She would be relieved by Madi Elish who would also beat roughed up a bit. Madi would end her day with two runs surrendered on five hits. Luckily, it was just enough for the Wildcats in this one.
Despite giving up five runs, Arizona brought out the bats in game three, hitting early and often as the Cats plated a run in the first, four in the fourth, and one in the seventh to come away with the narrow, 6-5 win.
Arizona’s offense would be led by Allie Skaggs as the Wildcat sophomore would finish an impressive 2-3 from the plate with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Where does Arizona Softball go from here?
With the wins, Arizona improves to 27-16 (6-12) on the year and will return to action on Wednesday when they take on New Mexico State for a double-header in Las Cruces, NM. The Wildcats will then follow that up with a two-game series against Fresno State next weekend.
