Arizona Baseball picks up series win with victory win over Nevada
TUCSON, AZ – Arizona Baseball (32-14, 13-8) scored early and often in this one, earning the four-game series win with the 8-2 victory over Nevada (22-20, 13-8).
Entering this fresh-off a tough loss in game three of this four-game series, Arizona Baseball looked to right the ship in the series finale with Anthony Susac on the bump.
Using a complete-game effort, the Wildcats were able to score early and often, even holding the Wolf Pack offense at bay en route to a dominant, 8-2 win!
Offensively, Arizona was led by the play of Nik McClaughry and Chase Davis who went 3-4 and 4-5 from the plate respectively. Together, the two combined for five of the eight Wildcat runs scored in this one. Chase would also go yard in this one, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
However, the bigger story was the dominant pitching by the Wildcats! Susac was fantastic, pitching five impeccable innings as he surrendered just one run on two hits with four strikeouts. He would be relieved by George Arias, Jr., Holden Christian, Quinn Flanagan, and Javyn Pimental in sequential order.
Together, the four would pitch an inning each, surrendering just one run on one hit, en route to securing the win for the Wildcats.
Jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, Arizona Baseball hung tough, cruising to an 8-2 victory to secure the four-game series win.
Arizona battled in game one, game two, and game three against Nevada, but unlike those other games, the Wildcats were dominant in the series finale.
Playing a 0-0 tie in the first inning, Arizona finally broke through in the second when they plated five runs thanks in large part to some timely hitting from the Cats.
With the Wildcats leading 1-0, the bases would be loaded for McClaughry who then stepped up to the plate. Taking a 1-1 pitch, the Wildcats’ shortstop would rip a perfectly placed ball down the left-field line that cleared the bases making it 4-0 in favor of the Cats. Luckily for us, the Wildcats wouldn’t stop there!
Tanner O’Tremba would be the next batter for the Wildcats who would reach base on an error committed by the Wolf Pack, scoring McClaughry from third to make it 5-0.
Nevada would get a run back in the fifth when the Wolf Pack used some well-timed hits that resulted in a run when Nevada catcher Dawson Martin grounded into a double-play that scored Landon Wallace to make it 5-1.
The Wildcats would score three more runs in the sixth, starting with Daniel Susac’s single that scored McClaughry to make it 6-1. Just a few batters later, Davis would blast his two-run shot over the right-field wall to make it 8-1, Cats.
Granted, Nevada would get one more run back in the top of the eighth, but the damage was already done as the Wildcats cruised to the 8-2 win!
Anthony Susac would pick up the win pitching for the Wildcats, improving to 4-1 on the year, and lowering his ERA to 7.30.
