With the regular season wrapping up for the Arizona Softball team, sophomore Allie Skaggs is proving to be a key player for the Wildcats.

The Arizona Softball team under coach Caitlin Lowe’s leadership is proving to be a run-scoring machine, as Sharlize Palacios, Carlie Scupin, and Izzy Pacho can put big numbers up on the scoreboard in no time. But fans cannot overlook the UofA’s second baseman.

The team’s second bagger, Allie Skaggs, has had quite an impressive last two weeks. Skaggs was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, for the last two weeks in a row.

She started quietly in the Utah series, going just 1 for 3 in the first game with a run scored. She scored two more times in the 8-0 second game win. Then, boom!

In the third game against Utah, Skaggs hit two homers, the first a grand slam, garnering five RBIs and two runs scored. But her hot streak didn’t stop there!

In four games, two away against New Mexico State, and two at Hillebrand as they squared off with Fresno State.

In Arizona’s first game against New Mexico State, Skaggs went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs. In the second game, she once again recorded five RBIs, homering in the first and the sixth. She took a break in the first game against Fresno State, with only two singles and one RBI.

Skaggs proved human in the second game against Fresno State, recording an 0 for 3 day. Still, in her four games, she ended up batting .400, slugging 1.000, and banging out three home runs and nine RBIs. Overall, not a bad week!

The sophomore second baseman played at Tucson’s Ironwood Ridge High School her senior year, after transferring from Louisville, Kentucky. Last year as a freshman she started 16 games at second base with a .545 slugging percentage and five home runs on the season.

This year, so far Skaggs has started 47 of 47 games, averaging .378, with a team-high OPS of 1.299. She also now leads in two other important stats for the Wildcats with 19 home runs and a slugging percentage of .830. Her fifty RBIs puts her tied at second on the team with first baseman Scupin. Catcher Palacios leads with 53 runs batted in.

As the UofA’s second bagger, Skaggs has proved to be a constant threat at the plate, and it looks like she will be an important cog in coach Caitlin Lowe’s run producing softball machine for the next two years.
