CANTON, OH – Taking part in the USFL title game in its inaugural season, former Wildcat Scooby Wright and the Birmingham Stallions are the champions.

Well, the 2022 USFL season went off without much of a hitch, as it was the league’s inaugural season, which does have any legal affiliation to the USFL that once existed in the 1980s.

On Sunday evening at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, OH, former Wildcat Scooby Wright and the Birmingham Stallions took on the Philadelphia Stars for the league’s championship.

Before the championship game, things have been steadily building for Scooby who has seen a career resurgence of sorts in football.

Despite his stints in the NFL, the AAF, and XFL leagues, Scooby has gotten another chance at professional football, and by all accounts, it has worked out.

In 12 games with the Stallions, Wright has 55 tackles (25 solo), with three sacks, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, four pass deflections, an interception, and a touchdown, all en route to an 11-1 record and now a USFL Title.

On Sunday, Scooby Wright and the Stallions continued their winning ways as the team beat the Philadelphia Stars to bring home the USFL title.

Fresh off a win against the New Orleans Breakers, Wright and Co. returned to action to face off against the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday evening for the championship round of the USFL playoffs.

In front of a decent-sized crowd in Canton, OH, the Stallions looked like a strong group from the start as they took a 3-0 lead early on; however, after going up 10-3, both teams would continue to trade scores, making this a competitive and intriguing matchup.

On offense, it was a combined effort as quarterback J’Mar Smith and backup quarterback Alex McGough completed a combined 17 of 28 passes for 208 yards with two touchdowns to just one interception.

Former Alabama running back Bo Scarborough would also have a big day, finishing with 135 yards rushing on 13 attempts with a touchdown.

The defense would have its hands full. Despite turning the ball over a few times, the Stars would still rack up 340 yards of offense and 30 points. Luckily, it was just a few key plays that made the difference in this one!

Making plays at linebacker as he did at Arizona, Scooby would finish his evening with three tackles (one solo). However, Wright’s biggest play would come late in the game as he would help seal the win for the Stallions.

Dropping back into coverage, Wright would read an errant KJ Costello pass perfectly, jumping the route and picking the ball off near the 45-yard line, returning it all the way to the end zone to make it 33-23.

Wright and the Stallions would come away with the eventual 33-30 win, bringing home the first USFL Title!
