By the Numbers: Analyzing the Arizona Football win over UCLA
As Arizona Football improves to 4-6 (2-5) on the year after their 34-28 win over No. 12 UCLA, we break down the numbers in the Wildcats’ victory.
With the 2022 Arizona Football season dwindling, the Wildcats picked up an improbable and Cinderella-like win on Saturday.
Playing in the Rose Bowl for the final time as Pac-12 foes, Arizona picked up the first marquee win of Jedd Fisch’s career, knocking off the No. 12 Bruins by a 34-28 final.
Fresh off of a big loss to Utah last week, Arizona looked like a different team this week, fighting and competing as they held the high-flying Bruins’ to just 465 yards of offense and more importantly, 28 points in their upset.
Snapping their four-game losing streak Arizona Football now improves to 4-6 (2-5) on the season with just two games remaining.
465 – Arizona’s defense has been good this season, but following their performance on Saturday, the Wildcats deserve a ton of credit.
Facing a high-flying and skilled UCLA offense, the Wildcats held their own, holding the Bruins to just 465 yards of offense and 28 points. More impressive, is that Arizona did this while generating just one turnover (a turnover on downs).
Still surrendering 220 yards of rushing offense, the Bruins moved the ball, but luckily, it did not equate to points.
2014 – Arizona’s last win against a ranked opponent that came on the road was against Oregon in 2014. Coincidentally, the Wildcats were significant underdogs in that game as well, and we all know what happened.
Arizona’s win on Saturday against the No. 12 Bruins was monumental in several ways, and is the first big, statement win in Jedd Fisch’s career.
2010 – It has been 12 years since Arizona last won in the Rose Bowl, and playing in Pasadena for the last time as Pac-12 foes, the Wildcats earned the improbable win by upsetting No. 12 UCLA by a 34-28 final.
The ending was bitter-sweet to the say least, and it sends Arizona off with a storybook ending in what may be their final trip to the Rose Bowl for a long time.
0 – Opposite of their game against Utah, where Arizona fumbled the ball seven times, and turned it over four times, luckily, the Wildcats did a much better job in protecting the football this week.
Granted, Arizona did fumble the ball twice on Saturday; however, the Wildcats were able to recover and ended up turning the ball zero times. As a result, Arizona won 34-28.
2 – By earning its fourth win of the season, Arizona has a slim, but realistic opportunity of making a bowl game. However, the magic number is two. Two more wins are all the Wildcats need to become bowl eligible.
A daunting challenge to say the least; however, the final two games of the season are more winnable than what Arizona has faced over the last four-to-five weeks. Here’s to hoping the Wildcats can continue the magic!
