No. 5 – Arizona Football & Trung Candidate run over ASU

When: November 27, 1998

Outcome: Arizona won 50-42

Where: Tucson, AZ

Beginning the season 10-1, the Wildcats entered the 1998 Territorial Cup against ASU with a lot of momentum, as well as the potential to end the regular season with the best record in school history.

While the Wildcats did come up short in making the school’s first-ever Rose Bowl earlier in the year… thanks to UCLA, there was still plenty to play for in this rivalry match-up. ASU was 5-5 and looking to become bowl eligible, and a win against Arizona would surely help their case, as well as providing bragging rights.

From the start, this game was a competitive one as both teams seemingly exchanged scores on the majority of their possessions. Going back and forth, luckily, it was the Wildcats that eventually came away with the 50-42 victory, outpacing the Sun Devils in this thrilling, rivalry win.

Arizona running back Trung Candidate would shatter the school rushing record, finishing the game with 288 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ win!
