No. 1 – Arizona spoils ASU’s chance at a perfect season

When: November 22, 1986

Outcome: Arizona won 34-17

Where: Tucson, AZ

Entering the game 9-0-1, the Sun Devils entered this one ranked No. 4 and with a Rose Bowl berth already clinched, however, the Sun Devils still had the potential to win a National Championship and even have a “perfect season”. Well, that is until the Wildcats decided to play spoiler!

Arizona would come out strong in this one, proving again that in rivalry games anything can happen!

Mostly led by a strong defensive effort, Arizona would take it to the Sun Devils, and it was this game that would provide many great moments from this rivalry that are still celebrated today!

Whether it was the infamous goal-line stand or the Chuck Cecil pick-six, this game was perhaps the best rivalry game between Arizona and ASU.

And although ASU would go on to beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl, the Wildcats ruined the perfect season for the Devils en route to the 34-17 win!

Needing more late-game heroics, Arizona would rely on their kicker once more, as Zendejas came up big, this time booting a 32-yard field with 1:43 remaining to complete the Arizona comeback, officially knocking ASU out of the Rose Bowl for the second time in four years.

The rally started when ASU muffed a punt deep in their own territory, which subsequently led to a touchdown from Arizona’s Don Be’Ans as he fell on the football in the end zone to pull the Cats within three points.
