Arizona Wildcats Baseball team struggled in 3-game series, against USC Trojans, but still have plenty to play for this season.

More from Wildcats Baseball

The Arizona Baseball team dropped to 22-9 (7-4 Pac-12) after dropping three games at home against the USC Trojans. The final scores of the 3-games, Thursday 4-1, Friday 13-6, Saturday 10-9. In all it wasnt a bad weekend for the Arizona Baseball. The offense was not bad, they just could not take advantage of runners left on base. Starting pitching was probably the biggest weakness, a weakness that had not shown its bad side this season untill this weekend.

Listening to post game talks with the player and head Coach Andy Lopez, I believe they took it as a learning experience for the whole team. Overall Arizona Wildcats Baseball has not been really tested in my eyes but facing a top-10 ranked opponent at home was a great way to really kick off the heart of the Pac-12 Conference play. And for those of you that didn’t follow this series to closely I will explain why this series was not as bad as it looks.

Wildcats Baseball starting pitchers gave up a total of 17 earned runs in only 10 innings pitched. That is a tough start for any team especially when six of those earned runs came in the short outing from, red shirt freshman, Robby Medel who only lasted one-third of an inning in Friday nights game.

On the up-side the bullpen had a good weekend as an overall team effort. In all the Wildcats used 7 pitchers in relief, pitching a total of 17 innings. In those 17 innings, pitchers allowed only 9 runs, 6 of those came in 4 innings pitched relief in the Friday night game. The only pitcher to be given the decision of a loss, Bobby Dalbec in his 2 innings pitched of relief in Saturdays game.

On the other side of things the Arizona Wildcats Offense struggled to take advantage of runner on base. In all the offense left 32 runners on base, yes you read that right 32, in a 3-games series where they lost by a total of 11 runs combined. Two of those games lost by a total of 4 runs.

In all the offense put up a total of 16 runs, and 30 hits, in comparison to USC who put up 27 runs, 41 hits, and left only 18 runner on base in the series. In comparison the Arizona Wildcats Baseball offense put up 29 runs, 32 hits, and only 17 left on base in last weekends series sweep against Oregon.

Looking at the stat sheet, all in all, it wasnt a bad weekend for Arizona Wildcats Baseball. Yes it was not their best performance but there was some positives to take away. The biggest take away is that this team showed what the “Beardown” mentality is all about. This relatively young team, experience speaking, showed a lot of grit and fight.

After falling behind in all three of the series games, the team fought back to put together some runs and almost stealing the final game of the series on Saturday. That is something to be proud about as a fan!

The Arizona Wildcats Baseball team now hits the road for a couple of series of Pac-12 play. They return home April 22 for a one game series against Arizona State then face the University of California over the weekend of April 24-26. So make sure you come out and Beardown while cheering on your Arizona Wildcats Baseball!!
