Wildcats Football Win More Than Just Their First Game
First week of college football is now complete and the good news is the Arizona Wildcats have won more than just their first game.
Playing your first game on opening night of the first week in college football is maybe a the best and worst thing possible in todays social media and TV coverage. Either way, the Wildcats got the job done and beat UTSA by a final of 42-32.
I know they didn’t win by the biggest of margins or was it an impressive win, but it still gets us to a 1-0 record. Given we not only had a lot of on and off the field issues, from pre-game suspensions to injuries, we did have to go deep into our roster and the boys played well enough to defend our home turf and get the season started in the right direction.

We lost a lot of players to injuries however minor or major they were. The injury that had us all holding our breath was Scooby Wrights. Thankfully it was not a season ending injury. It’s smart for him to take some time to make sure he’s fully healed before he returns.
Even though playing last thursday night seems like forever ago, I spoke to plenty of friends and bar guests who questioned if the Wildcats won the game or do just enough not to lose it. This may not have been our best performance by any means, but it could have been much worse. I back the Pac-12 and all of the Pac-12 teams (well most of them,) but I am true to the red and blue of my Arizona Wildcats!

I assure you that the Wildcats Football program won more this week than just one game by the end of the long weekend. What I mean is, we are still alive and have not lost a game; Wildcats fans dreams of a championship are still alive. Some schools weren’t as lucky as the Wildcats. Yes, we have a long way to go, but at least we didn’t lose it all in week one.
Unfortunately for that school up north, their season just might be over before it ever got started. Texas A&M put a big gash into Arizona State’s College Football Playoff dreams. Losing by such a big margin against an unranked team in a game you were favored to win isn’t the best thing to have happen to your team early in the season. As we learned last season, a team almost has to finish with a perfect season to even have a chance at being in the top-4 by years end.
Playing in the Pac-12 South, one of the toughest divisions of D-1 Football, doesn’t help ASU’s chances of winning the division. They are more than likely to suffer another loss or two in our division. I’m hoping for another loss for sure on November 21st (but that’s an article I’ll look forward to writing later.)
Even worse than the Wildcats not beating the point spread, Stanford took a bigger hit to their postseason dreams with a loss to Northwestern University on Saturday. Again nothing personal against them but they were pegged pretty much as the biggest threat to Oregon’s repeat as The Pac-12 North Championship, anyone re-thinking that prediction? Not that they can’t rebound and still make a run to be a challenger in the Pac-12 race, but an early loss to an unranked team does not help your resume. ASU students were be badgered so much that the ASU Athletic department had to issue a statement.
The Wildcats got back to their hard edge workouts.
There is a lot of work to be done during this long season but we have officially survived week one. And, with Coach Rich Rod leading our boys, I can’t wait to see how much we have improved just in this next week alone. So let’s get ready fans! It is officially football season and time to BEARDOWN for 11 more great weeks!!
