It’s Baaaacccccckkkkkk! The Arizona Football Team will perform own HAKA

Wildcats fans rejoice, senior Arizona Football Leader Sani Fuimaono has created a new wholly owned Arizona Wildcats written HAKA.

The Wildcats face off against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in football this weekend at Arizona Stadium, but that won’t be the only competing done, as both squads will face off, performing their Maori language-based HAKA.

When Arizona performed their Haka on national television on ESPN’s GameDay. ABC soaked it up and New Zealand fans were angered. ABC mistakenly called it the “Black Haka” and that is where the controversy began because the Black Haka is specific to a tribe in New Zealand and has to be performed exactly like it’s been done for eternity.

This time around, the team took this to heart and are making sure that they create a Haka with words specific to the Wildcats team, much like the BYU Cougars perform. The words must be pronounced correctly with the dance moves they have created to go with the words.

Sani Fuimaono took it upon himself to make this happen for the team for the 2016 season. He promised Zona Zealots back in June, “It’s all good, we’ll have something ready for you guys.” This is one Wildcat to fulfill his promises.

The team has struggled a bit in learning the dance and the words, but the timing is perfect for the team to take learning a bit more seriously for two reasons. One because the University of Hawaii is coming to Tucson and have their own Haka, so they can face off. And two, because it takes their minds off of all the recent losses they have had to endure.

This kind of activity helps solidify the team, bringing them together as one. Sani tweeted this week, “I am my brother’s keeper.” Our interpretation, with a little help from a friend, is to let the team pursue the things which make for the peace and the things by which they may build up one another. Or as the Beatles song goes, “Come together right now, over me.” Translated from Lyric interpretations, this refers to the message of a Yogi delivered to the band as a group that would supposedly heal the band and unite them as a single cohesive unit once again.

The team has been rehearsing for 15 minutes after practice all week for Saturday according to Justin Spears of the Daily Wildcat. He got this information from Sani, “We’ve been [learning] piece-by-piece and this week we’ve been going every day since Sunday, because the boys are like, ‘Hey man, we for sure gotta’ do it for Hawaii week.”

Coach Rich Rodriguez and AD Greg Byrne have been more than supportive of this teams’ initiative and of Arizona Football having and performing their own Wildcats Haka. We give thanks to Sani for his leadership and creativity and everyone involved for allowing the team to have their #hardedge voice back. BEARDOWN ARIZONA! Beat the Warriors twice and show them what you got!
