More bad news came for the Arizona Football team, as redshirt freshman wide receiver DeVaughn Cooper is no longer on the roster.

Of all the horrible things that have been happening to this program, and just when you think what else could go wrong, more bad news. On Friday, it became public that DeVaughn Cooper is no long on the Arizona Football roster.

The Southern California native who was looking to have a big impact in 2017, won’t be with the team. Major bummer for the Wildcats, as they were expecting big things from Cooper.

Instead, Arizona will have to look to who the next man up will be. Returning at receiver are of course; Shun Brown, Cam Denson and Shawn Poindexter. However, the most productive guys at receiver in 2016 are gone.

Well first, let’s take a look at who’s at the position!

Zach Benjamin- the 6-foot-4 senior transfer from USF, didn’t play last year as per transfer rules. Finally he is eligible, but comes with a lot of questions. He is a large target, and was actually quite productive out of high school, but has yet to play a down at the collegiate level.

Cedric Peterson- Saw action in 2016, and had an increased role as the season went on before going down with an injury. He’s one of the more realistic options moving forward, but with competition anything can happen. Peterson did have some decent stats in the limited action he saw, but how will he respond with an increased role in 2017?

Tony Ellison- The Granite Bay High School standout has yet to have much of an impact with the Wildcats. Could 2017 finally be his year? He definitely has the talent and athleticism to be successful, but can he finally breakout and be in the short rotation?

Tyrell “TJ” Johnson- He’s already had a sizable role with the Wildcats, but he hasn’t been that go-to guy in his career. He’s fast and elusive in the open field, now it’s just a matter of increasing his role in this offense, and letting him do his thing.

Brian Casteel- The true freshman who could have a decent impact this year. Plenty of opportunity for him coming in, and physically speaking, he looks the part at 6-feet and 214 pounds. He’s an impressive athlete that put up big numbers at Charter Oak High School. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles his chance.

Drew Dixon- Another true freshman with an opportunity coming in. Like Casteel, Dixon is an impressive athlete, and he put up big numbers in Arizona’s very own backyard. While at Sabino, he played just about every on the field, and this makes him a versatile athlete. He is definitely a big target and could provide more size at receiver should he see time this season.

Isaiah Lovett- Our dark horse pick for 2017. It will be interesting to see how the Wildcats use him moving forward, but if history is any indication, Lovett comes from good lineage (father is Lamont Lovett a former standout at Arizona). Maybe he redshirts in 2017 as a walk-on, but Lovett was a big time player at Mountain View High School in Tucson this past season. He possesses great size and athleticism, and if we’ve learned anything about Arizona Football, it’s that anybody can be successful here, and underdogs thrive.

With the absence of Cooper, there will be plenty of opportunity, and it will be interesting to see who steps at receiver this season. Bear Down, Arizona!
