With the 2017 football season nearly underway, the Wildcats gained a big time commitment from So Cal defensive lineman, Mykee Irving.

Great news for Friday, Wildcats fans! The Arizona Football team received a big commitment on Thursday night, from Southern California native Mykee Irving.

Irving is a huge, talented, defensive lineman that made his announcement via social media yesterday. Irving ultimately chose the Wildcats, despite having an offer from UCLA as well.

Irving becomes the tenth overall commitment in the 2018 recruiting class. He also helps to address a huge position of need on the defensive line. When we say huge, we mean 305 pounds and 6-foot-5 worth of this SoCal athlete.

It is certainly no secret the Wildcats, under head coach Rich Rodriguez, have had troubles at this position. But it seems they are addressing that. As you may recall, the Wildcats also had big commitments in 2017 from, Jalen Harris, My-King Johnson, Sione Taufahema, Kurtis Brown, and of course the incoming transfer of Dereck Boles.

This past season, Irving made 28 tackles (nine solo) with two tackles for a loss and a sack, through 11 games at Chaminade High School. Now entering his senior season, Irving is ready for a new challenge after transferring to the perennially talented, Calabasas High School.

Following Irvingā€™s commitment, we were able to briefly talk with him about his decision, what he brings to the game, and his upcoming senior season!

ZZ:Ā So first off, why Arizona? You had an offer from UCLA, what is it about the school or program that made you want to go there as opposed to staying near home?

MI: It just seemed like the best fit for me. The environment is crazy and they have the mentality I like! The School has a good psychology program and like I said the environment of the big stage just intrigues me to no end.Ā And Tucson is also a football town.

ZZ:Ā Whatā€™s the biggest/ best part of your game, that you feel you can bring and help the program with?

MI: The best part of my game is probably that I have good feet, and when I engage, I am really violent, and when I play I play with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

ZZ: You changed high schools from Chaminade to the perennially talented Calabasas, what inspired the move and what do they offer that maybe your old HS didnā€™t?

MI: It was a better opportunity to develop my skill set. They also had connections with NFLĀ trainers that helped me with my technique and helped me understand the position I played more. I wanted the practice to be conducive to me playing both ways.

ZZ:Ā Since youā€™ve committed and gotten that out of the way, do you feel it is advantageous for yourself to just focus on your senior year, granted other schools Iā€™m sure will still recruit, but still?

MI: This senior season is not about high school. It is about bettering myself and turning my self into an animal for the college season.

This season is just getting me ready to go up to Arizona and prove to everyone I belong. This whole off-season has not been for my senior year even though it is a big deal; this off-season and football season to come is prepping me for the next level. But this season will be one for the books!

Saying we are excited about this commitment is an understatement. Plus he looks like a great fitĀ from his highlights!
