There have been Wildcats teams from softball and basketball that have put together some of the greatest winning streaks in program history. Within each sport, the level of competition is so high that it’s hard to be able to perform at the highest level every game. When all the puzzle pieces align just right, the outcomes are special.
Arizona softball – 1996-1997
Over the last several decades, Arizona softball has been one of the elite programs in Division One. Since 1987 they have won eight National Championships, 22 WCWS appearances, 31 NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 Conference championships.
Not done yet. They also have had incredible players, such as Jennie Finch, Nancy Evans and the legendary Coach Mike Candrea. This past season Candrea added 1,500 wins to his resume:
From 1996-1997, the Wildcat softball team took their status to a whole other level – winning 47 games in a row (over the course of two seasons). That year they also won back to back national championships – not too shabby! Each of those teams had special players on them: Evans, Leah O’Brian and Jenny Dalton.
Recently on twitter, the NCAA recognized Wildcat softball as having one of the 11 greatest winning streaks in NCAA history!
Arizona men’s basketball – 1945-1951
Adding to the legacy of Arizona Athletics, the Arizona men’s basketball team over the last 100 years plus has done just that: Conference Championships, NCAA tournament appearances, a National championship and elite players that have gone on to play and coach in the NBA.
In addition, the men’s basketball program has been known to have one of the top home courts, McKale Center. Since its inception in 1973, Wildcat fans have witnessed many accomplishments and great players wearing red and blue. Retired jerseys and banners hang up in the rafters, reminding all opponents what they are about to face:
During the Fred Enke coaching era, he put together one the greatest home winning streaks in Wildcat basketball history. From 1945-1951, he had won 81 straight home games – talk about having home court advantage! Enke also led the Wildcat program to their first NCAA and NIT post season tournaments during those years.
Coach Lute Olson is second behind Enke with a 71 home game win streak. Current coach Sean Miller sits in third with 49 wins.
Not only have there been Wildcat teams that have been part of some amazing winning streaks, but there have been former Wildcat coaches and players that have been part of some as well. Manager of the Cleveland Indians and former Arizona baseball player Terry Francona, was part of the 2nd longest winning streak in Major League Baseball history with 22 wins!
