A lot of folks across the country had to pick up their jaws off of the floor while watching Khalil Tate and the Arizona Football team vs. Colorado game including Joan Bonvicini.

Arizona Football quarterback Khalil Tate inspired the nation, Wildcats fans, his fans, his family, his coaches and at least one other very special person. Beloved Arizona Women’s Basketball coach and legend, Joan Bonvicini.

Joan has led her teams to 701 career wins overall. She coached the Wildcats for 17 years and in 1995 her team won the NIT Championship. She is the most winningest coach in the history of Arizona Athletics, recording eight 20-win seasons. She also coached Team USA in the 90’s. Bottom line, Joan is well respected and inspirational to many. So much so that she was recently named one of 12 finalists for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

What is this Arizona legendary coach up to today? Bonvicini is a color analyst for the Pac-12 Network (and more) and she is a great interviewer. She doesn’t settle for simple answers to her questions, she presses, like a coach, and gets the answer she is looking for.

I met her for the first time at the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball media day this past week. She told me she loves her broadcasting career, “It’s been fun, I enjoy doing this I’m privileged to do it, I appreciate the Pac-12 and the other networks for having me.”

Bonvicini lives on the North West side of Tucson now, she used to live in the foothills. Her other job is an Insurance Agent selling mostly life and some health insurance. “Do I love coaching? Absolutely that’s my passion. But actually in business I’m and Insurance Agent in my free time,” explained Joan, “And the reason I did this, I actually use a lot of the skills I did as a coach, but I can still broadcast.”

Coach mentioned she was a huge college football fan, so we had to ask, was she going to the UCLA game? “Yeah absolutely. I’m looking forward to it. That’s why I love college football. Football really controls the atmosphere in the athletics department because there is a game once a week and you’re either up or down.”

But what is drawing her to this Arizona Football team? “Honestly, Khalil Tate, I’ve never seen a performance like that! I love college football, I’ve never seen anyone do that! But to see how that’s going to play this Saturday? I’m very excited, so I bought a season ticket.”

That’s awesome! She told us the athletic department used to put the other coaches on the 40-yard line, but now she sits in the north end of the end zone and the funny thing is, that’s where they put the coaches now.

Bonvicini put her coaching hat on, and pointed out that it wasn’t just Khalil who played well, “But watching how those other guys blocked for him, but the last run was crazy!” It was crazy coach! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the fans, and we will see you at the stadium! Bear Down!
