Arizona Football head coach Kevin Sumlin is busy putting together his coaching staff while recruiting and trying to sell seats to football games, and he’s one busy dude!

More from Wildcats Football

Arizona Football head coach Kevin Sumlin is busy offering his former Texas A&M recruits who have not yet signed with TAMU and traveling the country giving out offers in Texas. He is also trying to get his coaching staff together and may have hired Iona Uiagalelei as his new defensive line coach.

There are many Wildcats fans who would like to see at least one legendary former Arizona Football player on Sumlin’s coaching staff. On Wednesday, Greg Hansen reported that Ricky Hunley would not be one of them. That’s unfortunate because he is so ready to help these young Wildcats make it into the NFL and help guide them to becoming men as Sumlin suggested he wanted to do. Hunley would probably have wanted to be the defensive backs coach, but we haven’t heard who that would be yet.

That said, today, Iona Uagalelei (pronounced yoo-gah-lei-lee) has emerged as the most likely candidate for the Sumlin’s Defensive Line coach. Uagalelei’s nephew tweeted out about how excited he was that his retired uncle was going to be Arizona’s new Coach. Uagalelei has five children and roots

Uagalelei rose through the Mt. SAC coaching ranks over the last 18 years beginning in 2001. According to his nephew Kammy Delp (Oregon), he was about to retire. Mt. Sac stands for Mount San Antonio College is a community college or JUCO. Mt. SAC is not located in Texas, but in a Los Angeles suburb,  in Walnut, California. Uagalelei’s last position at Mt. SAC was as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator.

Uagalelei, a former football player, is an alumnus of Mt. Sac and Southern Utah University where he started his career as a graduate student coach according to his Mt. SAC bio.

Now the name Uagalelei may sound familiar to you. If you recall, there was a young QB that took part in an Arizona Football camp. His nephew is a St. John Bosco quarterback named DJ Uagalelei and is part of the class of 2020. DJ took part in a passing yardage contest in Tucson and set a record logging a 75-yard pass on his third attempt. His second attempt was a 73-yard pass.

Did your eyes just pop open?

Not much has been confirmed by the Arizona Athletics department, mostly because of the 10-day rule (the position must be posted for ten days before you can hire a candidate), we are getting snippets here and there. Zona Zealots will bring you what information we can provide to you based on the source of information. We have seen both the linebackers coach Scott Boone and the safeties coach Jamille Addae announce their own departures. Since Wikipedia is not a source we can use, we can’t report who they have listed, but someone is updating that page on the daily.
