The Kevin Sumlin Era begins as Arizona Football Spring Camp continues into week two, the competition between the offense and the defense are ratcheting up the competition. Coaches are dancing and loving the weather, posting Tweets with sunsets and beautiful blue skies hoping to attract recruits.
After the media complained about the lack of access during Spring ball all over Twitter, Arizona Athletics made a few compromises. The first compromise was to allow access to one coach a day after practice. What we didn’t bargain for was the miking up of the coach during practice and the publishing of said video before each press session.
Along with miked up coaches, fans get to peak in at practice every day. Hard Rock, old school rock and roll and heavy metal music are now heard booming into Arizona Stadium in addition to rap music. It was delightful to hear the melodic “Strawberry Letter 23″ by the Brother’s Johnson playing loudly as players hit each other in pads which you can catch on the Arizona Football Snapchat account today.
One week after the Spring Camp began, Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone was up first. Coach Mazzone is very positive when he coaches. He seems to refer to Aaron Rogers quite often. He is focusing a lot on footwork. He also mentioned that the team will be involved in meditation.
ZZ Site Expert Eric Townsend wrote about why Mazzone will be fantastic for quarterback Khalil Tate’s growth, “Coaching guru has established himself over the years as being a great position coach and offensive coordinator. Of all the years spent coaching, Mazzone has coached in the Pac-10/12 for roughly seven of them, having served as an assistant for Oregon State, ASU, and UCLA. 2018 will be his first official year in Tucson.”
Day two of access gave us Special Teams Coach Jeremy Springer, who is also active on social media. Springer was asked to name players who impressed him so far in camp. He started with Gary Brightwell, Nate Tilford, and Jace Whittaker and then he slipped in last season award winners Colin Schooler and Tony Fields II. You can conclude that these coaches are starting fresh with an “Impress me now” attitude. “On my team, everyone’s going to play [on special teams],” said Springer.

Last night it was Cornerbacks Coach Demetrice Martin (Coach Meat’s) turn! He means business. On Monday Coach Meat declared, “This how we do it. We the block A. I thought they knew. New Era starts today for the Block A; full pads that is. Yee Yee !” That gives you a taste of his personality which we found inviting, and everything you want in a cornerback coach. He is full of instruction, and praise when appropriate. He comes to the Pac-12 with a lot of established relationships and wants to recruit players that fit in his defense. It’s a new era at Arizona, “Now I’m looking for the guys who want to build something,” Martin explained.
Apparently, there is a big difference coming on defense. Remember all those plays where the defense gave space to the offense to run or make a play? Yeah, that space is gone, corners are picking up their wide receivers at the line of scrimmage.
Since the team is playing in full pads, the competition between the defense and offense is getting hotter as evidence by Assistant Quarterback Coach BJ Denker.
Apparently, Wednesday Wallpaper is also a new thing with Arizona Football, so be on the lookout.
Head Coach Kevin Sumlin promised to bring the Arizona Football Alumni back to participate in the program. There will be a Football Alumni Spring Weekend the weekend of the Spring Football Game from April 13-14. Athletic Director Dave Heeke made the announcement in his Wildcat Wednesday newsletter, “The A-Club and our football program would like to invite all football letter winners to join us for the upcoming Football Alumni Spring Weekend.”
Alumni are invited to join head coach Kevin Sumlin and members of the coaching staff at a golf tournament, with dinner, then a BBQ on campus before the Spring Game. If you fit the bill and you want to go, you can RSVP here.
I spoke to Mark Rogers TV about the Spring Camp, and he told me Arizona was ranked No. 13 in the ESPN Insider top NCAA Offenses for the next three years. Find out more:
