It happened! Just before noon on Saturday during the 5th round of the NFL Draft, Arizona Football senior cornerback Dane Cruikshank got the call and was drafted as the No. 152 overall pick. Dane too smooth just celebrated his birthday yesterday and got a huge present today. “It was a dream come true when I got the call,” he told ZZ.
Dane is the first Arizona Football player drafted since Scooby Wright III in 2016 and the 180th pick overall for Arizona Football.
The Chino Hills California native was popular during NFL Team visits. Teams such as the Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and most recently, and the Tennessee Titans which was possibly the last team he visited. Being drafted is heartwarming because Dane did not take the easy route to the NFL, he started out in JUCO (Citrus College) before coming to Tucson and played in 25 games for the cardinal and blue as a Safety (Spur). He started in 13 games in 2017 and completed his college career making 108 tackles and snatching five interceptions.
Dane did well in the combine, he ranked No. 1 in bench press among safeties pushing the weights up 25 times and man is he fast. Just listen to the announcers talking about his speed in the official draft announcement.
What you may not know is that the Titans General Manager Jon Robinson really wanted Dane. He traded picks 162 (5th round) and the 215 (6th round) to move up in the draft so he could grab Dane because the team stated he is a “Player known for his versatility.” Cruikshank joins fellow Pac-12 alumni QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon) and Trojans Adoree’ Jackson and Antwaun Woods,
The Arizona Team Captain spoke to a few in the media, “I am just looking forward to the opportunity, and looking forward to taking advantage of it,” said Dane. It’s clear he knows he has what it takes to make the team, and he has a great shot. Cruikshank is also versatile and can play multiple positions which give the Titans flexibility with the Wildcat.
Twitter announcements:
Smoove’s teammates were quick to congratulate him on Instagram including Scotty Young, and Devaughn Cooper. Zona Zealots Site Expert Eric Townsend wanted to share his sentiment with Dane: I knew he would be a star from the start. Felt he was a steal in the class of 2015, and every year here, he’s improved. He’s a hard-working talent, the Tennessee Titans got a good one today.
I had the privilege to interview Dane before his last season as a Wildcat. As a Senior Leader, he was ready to make things happen and took the bull by the horns. And that he did! The Cats were projected end up next to last in the Pac-12 with all the youth on the team and the results from the year before. I came away impressed with the young man. Cruikshank never gives up on a play, he pushes it all the time.
