Arizona Football commit Grant Gunnell beats Texas state record
In a bit of good news for Arizona Football, current 2019 commit Grant Gunnell beat the Texas state passing record on Friday evening.
In the middle of a terrific senior year, Arizona Football commit Grant Gunnell is proving his doubters wrong and continues to impress in the state of Texas.
If you have been following, Gunnell re-opened his recruitment over the summer, and picked the University of Arizona subsequently. Since committing to the Wildcats, Gunnell, a former four-star quarterback, saw his recruiting rating drop.

Arizona fans beware, because it wasn’t for some ‘everyone out to get us’ reason, but Gunnell struggled over the summer in a few different passing tournaments and camps. So naturally, his ranking dropped, albeit a bit unfair.
In his four-year career at St. Pius X High School in Houston, TX, the ‘gun-slingin’ Gunnell has put up Texas-sized passing numbers.
His career all began in 2015 for the Panthers, where he saw limited snaps through the first few games. Then a tall and scrawny kid, Gunnell would take over in week four and not look back.
In that game, Gunnell would finish with 10 completions on 13 attempts for 120 yards and two touchdowns en route to a 49-3 win over Concordia Lutheran. Gunnell would finish the year with 98 completions on 149 attempts (66 percent completion rate) for 1,447 yards and 16 touchdowns to just four interceptions.
He would also add another 309 yards on the ground with seven touchdowns according to Maxpreps. This would all setup for a legendary high school career.
Fast forward to 2018, and Gunnell is widely considered one of the best players in the state of Texas. Over the years, he has led the Panthers to many wins with a lot of passing yards and a lot of touchdowns.
Heading into Friday night, he trailed Hunter Bile for the all-time state record. Fittingly, Gunnell would break that record against Concordia Lutheran en route to a 34-14 win.
The senior quarterback will have just two regular season games left, before taking his 7-1 team to the Texas state playoffs. Gunnell will have a great chance at adding to that record, and possibly even reach the state passing touchdown record. Gunnell is just six away from tying.
Here are some highlights from Gunnell earlier this year:
At Zona Zealots, we would like to congratulate Grant on the well-deserved accomplishment! It’s no easy feat to do what he did, and he absolutely worked for it! Bear Down, Grant and Bear Down, Arizona!
