With Arizona Football head coach Kevin Sumlin on the hot seat for 2020, with everything going on, here’s why he and the staff can’t fully be judged!

2020 has been a cluster to say the least. With the on-going Covid pandemic, it has truly disrupted virtually everything, and depending on which way you look at it, in my opinion, it has impacted both Arizona Football and Kevin Sumlin in both positive and negative ways.

What do I mean? Well, I will get to that in a minute, but for starters, let’s back this up a little bit.

As we all recall, Sumlin was brought in prior to the 2018 season. A man that saw immense success at Houston before taking the job at Texas A&M, I thought despite the slight rough patch he ran into while in College Station, this was a very good hire for the Wildcats.

Over two years later, I am certainly having second thoughts on the hire, and after going just 9-15 in his first two years as head coach of the Wildcats, the luster certainly would wear off for just about any fan.

So coming in to 2020, it’s only natural that he would be on the hot seat. However, let me get to the original point I was trying to make.

Given the circumstances of everything, there is a good possibility that not only will Arizona’s football season be reduced to just conference games, but possibly being even pushed out to later into the Spring even.

So hypothetically, let’s say Arizona does have a season, but plays just their conference only schedule, or even later in the year, given those drastic changes, is it fair to appropriately judge Sumlin under those circumstances.

Sure, I get winning reigns supreme and in his case is the measure of success, but 2020 has thrown everything out of whack enough that is has really drastically changed the trajectory of the 2020 season.

Look, chances are Arizona was going to struggle this year anyways, but asking him to suddenly turn in a make or break season with the challenges presented, it’s almost as if this year is just a “sacrificed season”, until we can reset in 2021.

Also, with the financial challenges that Arizona Athletics is facing, perhaps giving Sumlin another year would be wise anyways.
