Arizona Basketball coaching search a ‘Debacle’ says Richard Jefferson
Picking up more attention with the National Media, the Arizona Basketball head coaching search has become a ‘debacle’ says Richard Jefferson
Well, Arizona Basketball is a complete mess, and in case we needed a little reminder of just how dysfunctional things currently are, former Wildcat Richard Jefferson brought attention to the current coaching search a ‘debacle’.
Vested in the search just like we all seemingly are, Jefferson sat down with former Wildcat and friend Gilbert Arenas on what appeared to be a live Instagram post. Together, the two discussed Arizona Basketball, the current list of candidates, etc.

Gilbert was particularly critical of some of Arizona’s potential choices to replace former head coach Sean Miller, saying that “An assistant coach doesn’t have credentials.”
Meanwhile, RJ, who has been a vocal Miller supporter, even called this whole situation a ‘debacle’. And he’s right, it has been a debacle.
Over about the last week since the firing of Miller, we all learned that the school had hired a Search Firm back in February, and had the full intent of firing Miller, yet waited until the first week of April to do so.
Regardless of whether you feel the firing was justified or not, we can at least agree the timing of everything is puzzling to, say the least. Athletic Director Dave Heeke and school President Dr. Robert Robbins sat on this for nearly two months, and it is becoming clear the two had no solid plan in place beyond Millers’ firing.
Arizona Basketball has become a tarnished brand, and ex-Cat Richard Jefferson is right, this whole situation has become an absolute ‘debacle’.
Robbins and Heeke took too long to move on from Miller and perhaps underestimated which coaches out there would even be interested in the Wildcats right now all things considered.
The longer this takes to find a suitable replacement, because let’s face it, Arizona isn’t getting an elite head coach, the worse this looks on the program and school. If anything, the current players deserve better.
