Last week was a huge week for Gabe York and his Arizona Wildcats basketball team. Gabe played very well, and Coach Sean Miller had some great things to say about him and the team.

Coach Sean Miller on Gabe York post game on the last play:

“It was kind of awkward in that no one really went to offensive rebound or rebound period, not only their team but our team, it was kind of like the parting of the parting of the red sea, and he went in and tipped it in.”

On his performance overall:

“Gabe made a number of big plays, he defended really well: [Brandon] Taylor at the end. Obviously he had a huge shot when they made their run and he’s really improving; he’s playing his best basketball of his career right now.”

“He’s more well-rounded than he has ever been before..if he misses three’s he doesn’t get down on himself.” Well that is key, and contagious!

On what turned the Utah game around to Arizona’s favor:

“We stayed with it..to be able to win in this type of atmosphere and this game against a team such as Utah. Our guys never really broke..we really responded. I feel like we rebounded our own missed shots..we turned it around in the second half..we are a physical team. Our missed shots never affected our defense. ”

Arizona threw different defenses at Dolan Wright, according to Coach Miller, there was no special strategy.

“You want to be good at both ends…playing against Utah it’s not easy to score on them..the good news for us is that it was a struggle from them to score on us too.”

On Arizona’s share of the Pac-12 championship and looking forward:

“Obviously it’s not easy to win..this is the first time we have won back to back pac-12 championships pac-10 championships in a long time..what we just did is something special. This last home stand will solidify an outright championship and we have to be able to win one of these two games to do it, now our focus is on moving forward.”

More on York:

“Gabe’s playing his best basketball not only in this season, but I believe of his career. He has a much more rounded game right now than he ever has, he gets fouled more, he shows you he is more aggressive…Obviously he is our teams best three pointer shooter, he’s shooting the ball really well right now…he is contributing in a lot of different ways towards success of our team..he is an experienced player and a very important part of what we do.”

On the last games for the four seniors especially Matt Korcheck (local to Tucson), T.J. McConnell, and Drew Mellon (and Ryan Anderson) on what it means to him and the team:

“Drew’s [Drew Mellon] in the same category as T.J. and Matt in that they are off the court, excellent people, they take care of business. In the locker room there’s always been, even in the year Matt and T.J. sat out, they sat out the same year, they were contributors to the bigger issue which is our teams success..When you do that consistently over time, you have great respect and admiration from the team.”
