Producer of ‘Ted 2’ is an Arizona Wildcat, ASU Jokes Abound

One of the producers of the upcoming comedy “Ted 2”, Scott Stuber, is a graduate of the University of Arizona. He made the leading lady of the film an Arizona State Graduate.

In a comedy genre film, there are jokes are a plenty. When you have an Arizona Wildcats grad as a producer, there is a great opportunity to poke fun as ASU, and that is exactly what this Wildcat did.

AZ Central film critic Bill Goodykoontz dreamed of being a basketball player, but instead became a writer.  This week, he wrote about the movie “Ted 2” which is the second movie in the “Ted” series about a cute stuffed bear with a dirty mouth and very macho ways. This cute little bear is alive, but not he is not too cute once he opens his mouth.

According to Goodykoontz, “It’s not the first time Arizona State University has been the butt of pop-culture jokes, but the slamming the school takes in “Ted 2″ is almost certainly the most relentless.”

Please note, I have not yet seen this movie myself, this article is based on Goodekoontz’s review, but it sounds like I am really going to enjoy it now that I know this ahead of time.

In the first movie, Ted played by Seth MacFarlane and his roommate/brother/best friend John Bennett played by Mark Wahlberg have some troubles in their own relationship. The plot thickens with an abduction of Ted but it all works out in the end.

In this movie Ted is engaged and wants to get married to his love, but he is deemed “Property” and not “Human” according to a little pesky law. This law is standing in his way and Ted needs to prove he is human to be able to have the marriage recognized by the government.

Ted hires a lawyer, played by Amanda Seyfried, an extremely recent law graduate of ASU to represent him. When the brothers discover this fact the comedy and relentless jokes ensue from there from what we are told.

According to Goodykoontz, this isn’t the first time ASU has been the butt of jokes in TV and Movies:

"This isn’t the first time ASU has taken it on the chin in the world of pop culture. “The Simpsons” famously made fun of the school (“Looks like Heaven’s easier to get into than Arizona State”), as did “Dumb and Dumber To” (Jeff Daniel’s dim-bulb character opens his mail for the first time in 20 years and discovers that “I got into Arizona State,” then shrugs and tosses the acceptance letter aside. Then there was Alec Baldwin’s character in “30 Rock,” who said, “A parent is the one person who is supposed to make their kid think they can do anything — says they’re beautiful, even when they’re ugly, thinks they’re smart, even when they go to Arizona State.”"

Being a selected member of the Facebook fan page “Pac-12 Fight Club“, I have seen my share of ASU vs. UA memes, put downs, arguments, slams, and outright cruelty exhibited between the UA and ASU fans on the site, worse than UCLA vs. USC.

I honestly cannot stop laughing sometimes when I am on this page, you have to join it if you enjoy this type of stuff. We even have former athletes on the page including former Arizona Wildcat football player Jake Fischer and Utah’s Jason Boone.

The film opens Friday, June 26 at a theater near you, let the leveraging of the jokes in this movie enlighten the next couple months of our Wildcat life in the Pac-12 Fight Club and all over social media.

Beardown Scott! Way to represent!
