Arizona Wildcats: How will the next star recruit announce his Commitment?

facebooktwitterreddit

Announcing your commitment to your future school can be exciting for every student, but for a college athlete, and future Arizona Wildcats, it is something they will never forget.

Coach Sean Miller and his coaching staff are hoping to get a few more class of 2016 basketball recruits this year. Coach Rich Rodriguez has a whole class of commits coming up for next year. Arizona Wildcats commits generally use Twitter to announce their commitment, but some of done it with flair and originality.

My Wildcat is not a college athlete, but she did dream of being one. When touching on this subject, I am reminded of a personal story I would like to share with you all. I think it gives context into why a recruit would want to announce their commitment in a special way.

More from Arizona Wildcats

I went with my Wildcat to the Arizona Experience, an all day tour and conference to explore the University of Arizona to see if you want to attend. She told us she was going to make up her mind at the end of the day. We had toured Eugene, Oregon, flew to Bloomington Indiana, and finally landed in Tucson Arizona. She promised that at the end of the day she was going to make up her mind.

Would it be Oregon? Indiana? Or Arizona where her older sister graduated? We were having dinner later on with our family friends who both were former Arizona Wildcat athletes, and they wanted her to choose Arizona. There was no other choice in their minds.

We had to make our traditional second walk through at the Student Union to check out all the Wildcat gear. This was the first time I didn’t know if I was buying anything, but I secretly hoped so. Of course, with her high-end taste, she found a $65 pullover she just had to have. I told her I would only buy it if she were going to commit to going to the UofA. She beamed this huge smile at me; I knew she was sold.

Influenced by reveals of committing athletes, she thought it would be fun to act like an athlete and reveal her choice. Just because she was cut from the basketball team in high school by a club coach posing as a real coach, doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have her glorious moment!

Since she originally was 95% sold on the University of Oregon, I had already spent $75 on an Oregon Nike sports jacket which she wore a few times and was now going to be thrown into the ‘give it away’ pile. But she had it with her, so it made perfect sense!

We walked into the restaurant, and she was wearing her new Arizona pullover under her Oregon jacket. You should have seen their faces, ‘what are you wearing that piece of crap for?’ they asked. She sat down, looked defeated, then asked if she could take her jacket off then she unzipped her jacket, pulled the jacket off and said, ‘I am going to the University of Arizona!’

Thunderous applause resulted at the table, along with looks of total relief from our friends..it was something we will never forget. As a parent, I was very proud and happy with her decision, and I could only imagine would it be like to be the parent of a four or five-star athlete.

Let’s review a few fun and important commitments. I remember each and every one of these commitments, and I remember how happy I was when I heard ‘Arizona.’ Head coach Sean Miller is working with his staff to land both Josh Jackson and Terrence Ferguson, who recently de-committed. If they were to commit, how would the outdo Rawle? Stanley?

The most recent recruit to commit to the University of Arizona is an Arizona Basketball five-star class of 2016 guard, Rawle Alkins. It was such a big announcement; it garnered a spot on ESPNU. It was a huge event for Wildcats fans, St. John’s fans, and North Carolina fans. Looking forward to this all day long, ESPNU strung it out for a long time. Alkins revealed his commitment with an Arizona Wildcats tie that he hid under his buttoned suit jacket. Rawle teased fans first.

Another tease was DeVaughn Cooper, from Narbonne High School in California. He tweeted out a picture of himself in different college football uniforms. He had originally committed to Arizona, but when his high school teammate Sean Riley de-committed, he decided to test the waters a bit, and with our rivals no less! Notice the uniform he is wearing in the biggest picture in the meme.

Cooper waited to NLI Signing Day to announce his decision, and he chose the University of Arizona once more! What’s the saying again? ‘If you let it go and it comes back to you it was meant to be?’

Michael Eletise, an Arizona Football offensive lineman commit, was the No. 1 recruit in Hawaii, if he were to commit, it would be huge for coach Rich Rodriguez. Eletise landed a spot on the local news. He narrowed his schools to five: Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Ole Miss and Nebraska. He narrowed his list down from 42 to five, and then to one, Arizona. He combined it with putting on a fabulous hat.

Allonzo Trier told Evan Daniels with Scout.com, who announced it on Twitter. Lucky Evan, he got to break the news!

Stanley Johnson

secured a daytime spot on the local news. He sat at a table, and when asked to reveal his choice, he pulled out a pair of Air Jordans specially made with the Arizona logo and colors. It was a pretty unique way to announce.

Aaron Gordon

waited to announce. He waited until he played in the McDonald’s All-American game. With a McDonald’s backdrop and his parents at his side, he declared for Arizona. Guess who else was on that team?

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

, and yes he was in attendance.

Although this athlete is not a Wildcat, we would be remiss not to include Ole’ Miss four-star safety Deontay Anderson, who

 jumped out of a plane

and had the whole event videotaped. He didn’t reveal his choice until the end of the video. Difficult to top that!

Whatever method the next athlete chooses in order to announce his commitment to the University of Arizona, it won’t matter, Wildcats fans will just still be happy! Who will be next? And how will they announce? Wildcats fans cannot wait to find out!
