In what has been a rather up and down year for Arizona, perhaps fans can find a silver lining from a historical record broken this past weekend. Kaleb Tarczewski won his 110th basketball game as an Arizona Wildcat.
During his four-year career with the Wildcats, the Senior big man has predicated himself on strong defensive play, and a certain fiery, competitiveness. The Pac-12 Conference Tournament proved to be more of the same for Tarczewski, as he averaged 7.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the two games versus Colorado and Oregon.
All the way from the wild wilderness of the Northeast, Tarczewski came all the way to Tucson, AZ, rated as the 4th best player overall in the 2012 recruiting class according to ESPN. Some might say he hasn’t quite “lived up his hype”, and you may call him what you will, but there is certainly no doubting his heart, nor the love he has for this University.
In the world of college basketball where “one and done” has become the standard, Tarczewski will leave Tucson a graduate from the Eller College of Business, as well as the winningest player in Arizona Basketball History.
Two great honors that will be difficult for any future Wildcat to match, Tarczewski certainly embodies the phrase, Student Athlete. In his career, he has represented the University, Basketball program as well as the Tucson Community with poise and class.
Statistically, Zeus’ numbers have been almost God-like as well, amassing 1,177 points, 869 rebounds, and 114 blocks. Don’t forget, the Wildcats still have the NCAA tournament looming, where Zeus can add to his already impressive resume. Perhaps even more impressive than the stats are his 110 victories while at Arizona.
Tarczewski officially became the winningest player in school history on Friday, passing former Wildcat great Matt Muehlebach, following Arizona’s 82-78 win over Colorado.
Anthony Gimino, TucsonNewsNow.com, explained the records history in anticipation Tarczewski’s win in Vegas:
"With a victory in the Pac-12 quarterfinals Thursday, Arizona center Kaleb Tarczewski will be alone at the top of the school’s career victories in game played with 110. He is tied with former Arizona guard Matt Muehlebach with 109 victories. Muehlebach, a broadcaster for the Pac-12 Networks and Tucson attorney, has held the record since 1991 when he passed Sean Elliott, Anthony cook and Jud Buechler, who each were part of 105 wins in their careers."
Tarczewski will go down as one of the Wildcat greats and the contributions he has given to the school as well as the program will not be forgotten.
Muehlebach interviewed a younger Kaleb after a win over Wazzu in 2013:
