Wildcat Jim Furyk makes HISTORY! The first to shoot a round of 58 in a PGA Tour
PGA Golfer and former Arizona Wildcat Jim Furyk became the first golfer in history to shoot a round of golf of 58!
Six golfers, including Jim Furyk, have ever shot under a 60 in a round of golf in the PGA, and none under 59. Today, in the final round of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, Arizona’s own Jim Furyk (pronounced Feeyurik) shot a 58 for the first time in PGA Tour history.
The five other professional Golfers who have shot 59 include Stuart Appleby (2010), Paul Goydos (2010), David Duval (1999), Chip Beck (1991), and Al Geiberger (1971). You notice none of the famous golfers’ names are on the list, not Tiger Woods, not, Nicholson, not Watson, none.
With 17 PGA Tour victories shot a 59 in the 2013 BMW Championship, but no one has ever shot under 59 on the PGA tour. His caddy Mike “Fluff” Cowan was with him for both his 59 round in 2013 and this record 58 round today.

“He was playing flawless golf,” said Fluff with his walrus mustache, “Driving at every fairway and hitting a lot of great iron shots, and like you said, it’s nothing you talk about just go about your business you keep trying to keep it going and he did that, very easily. You know 58 is special, it’s the lowest round that’s ever been shot on the PGA Tour so that unto itself is a special round of golf.”
While Jim is having all this set in, his fellow golfer Miguel Angel Carballo spoke about how he felt Furyk was invincible today, “He made an Eagle on number three, and after the eagle, we talked about that he could make everything — but not as much as he finally did.”
The 41-year-old Furyk shot a course record 27 on the front nine including an eagle on the par-four third hole. He was inches away from a 57 on the 18th whole missing on a 27-foot birdie attempt.
After this important and memorable round, it’s hard to imagine how euphoric it felt for him to write his score on the board before walking off the course.
A low-key, humble Furyk was asked about his thoughts on how he did it, “I had the pedal down in the front nine,” Jim said, “Once I hit it, what was it, about a foot on number nine and tapped it in for eight under par, then I said, alright, you know you start running the numbers; Three under on the back shoots 59, you got a lot of short irons on the back nine. If you get the ball on the fairway, you get 11, 13, 14, 15..”

If you are wondering how he finished the tournament, Furyk finished 11-under and was four shots behind leader Daniel Berger. Furyk teed off at 8:41 a.m. starting 1-over par while the winner finished at 15-under and didn’t tee off until six hours later. Another day, another Wildcat making history, we will take it!
