In perhaps one of the most historic World Series match-ups in quite some time, Former Wildcat Kenny Lofton got to take part in the ceremonial first pitch for his former club, the Cleveland Indians.
If we have learned anything about baseball, it is the parity that exists within the sport from time-to-time. This World Series will have a few connections to the University of Arizona, with Former Wildcat Kenny Lofton taking part in the festivities.
It has been 71 years since the Chicago Cubs have been to the World Series, and 108 years since they last won, and it has been 68 years since the Cleveland Indians have won, with their last appearance coming in 1997.

You know Kenny almost took the cubs to the World Series in 2003…a fan interfere with a catch and the Cubs went on to lose and not advance. So Lofton has connections to both clubs.
The two organizations came together Tuesday at Progressive Field, or the stadium formerly known as Jacobs Field, to start the Series between the storied programs, long wishing to end their championship woes.
Regardless of the outcome, this will easily go down as one of the most historic World Series match-ups, just for the obvious reason of a potential end to some pretty significant curses.
Game one started with a bang from the opening pitch! As we had previously mentioned, Lofton threw the ceremonial first pitch, and seemingly had a unique way of getting to Cleveland just to partake in the opening events.
The long-retired veteran delivered the pitch to the thunderous roar of a packed ballpark. That energy carried over into the night, as the red-hot Indians paced themselves to a 6-0 victory over the visiting, Chicago Cubs.
Also, as we had previously mentioned, the UofA will have a few connections in this game, beyond just Lofton throwing out the first pitch. He almost didn’t make it, by the way, needed a ticket, so a fan gave him his seat in exchange for a selfie.
If you may recall, we previously advised that Terry Francona is leading the Indians as the general manager, and will be going for his third championship as a big league skipper.
Additionally, Cleveland Indians bench coach Brad Mills (Former Arizona Baseball player) will once again serve as Francona’s right-hand man. Mills was on Francona’s staff from 2004-2009 in Boston, winning two World Series (2004 & 2007) with the Red Sox during that time.
Lastly, although he doesn’t have direct ties to Arizona, Cubs’ darling third baseman, Kris Bryant had previously played under current Arizona Head Coach, Jay Johnson during his time at the University of San Diego.

Regardless of who wins, we are just glad to see our Wildcats well represented in all sports at the professional level, even if it just so happens to consistently be on the biggest stage. Bear Down Arizona and Kenny Lofton and good luck to our former Wildcats!
