Apparently there were NO Shining Moments for Arizona Basketball in NCAA Tournament
Just after the end of the NCAA Championship game, a new Champ is crowned, and CBS/TBS plays their One Shining Moment montage. They must have made a mistake.
CBS uses a song titled “One Shining Moment” for their special annual NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament montage which they play right after the Champions are crowned with baseball caps and a championship shirt. The song is sung by Luther Vandross and was written specifically for the tournament by David Barrett.
For Arizona Basketball fans, watching the montage this year wasn’t that fun actually. Some even missed our band member dancing, in the beginning. We were guilty of that too; we were looking for Arizona Wildcats. Not one was included
So why, after three days since the final game, did we feel like we weren’t ready to put this to bed?
More from Wildcats Basketball
- Arizona Basketball likely to schedule Florida Atlantic for 2023
- Rondae Hollis-Jefferson’s FIBA World Cup performance is reminiscent of Kobe Bryant’s
- Rawle Alkins a star in the Drew League this summer
- Arizona Basketball to play in ‘Battle 4 Atlantis’ in 2024
- Reflections on the Pac-12, the Arizona Wildcats, and other memories
We know that it shouldn’t matter in the scheme of life that CBS couldn’t find one shining moment to add to their montage. Maybe their editor had brackets with Arizona as the victor and lost all of their chances to win money? Check, we are also guilty of betting our wad of money on the Cats.
If they are going to include a Miami player, Michigan State even, what the heck were they doing completing shutting out the Cats?
Maybe we are spoiled. Every year, no matter how far Arizona makes it in the tournament, CBS finds at least one of their shining moments to include.
In 2017, CBS included a member of the Pride of Arizona in their montage for a second. We watched the montage it a couple of times to catch those red and white stripes and to make sure there was nothing we missed.
Plenty of fans complained and commented about the lack of Wildcats. It was the one thing they were waiting for as a sort of consolation prize. The Wildcats made it to the Sweet 16 and lost by only a few points missing their chance to make it to the Elite Eight.
Granted Oregon made it to the Final Four, but at least ten shining moments were included for the Ducks. Good for them, they earned a couple, but Gonzaga had less than Oregon. In fact, their Oregon Duck mascot starts out the montage, then a young fan, the cheerleaders, the finally different plays and players. At least one team from the Pac-12 made it in!
Correction, two Pac-12 teams made the cut.
UCLA’s Lonzo Ball got his moment; his team didn’t make it past the Sweet 16 either. South Carolina, yep at least two or three moments. Wisconsin as well, at least twice. Then there was Nevada, Notre Dame, and West Virginia a few times.
USC got shut out completely, not even a member of the Trojan band got a fleeting moment.
You can watch the full video here:
Surely, Rawle running back on the court after hurting his finger would have been a great moment. Maybe the winning locker room after one of the first two wins? Chance Comanche’s dunk in the Xavier game?
The Xavier Musketeers fans weren’t happy either! Their upset celebration after beating Arizona had a funny moment, and it wasn’t included in the montage. Xavier, however, was included multiple times as warranted by making it to the Elite Eight.
Hopefully, enough folks complained about the snub to CBS that they never make this mistake again. Until then, we can watch all the other many One Shining Moment video’s and relish in the past.

Okay, we are feeling a bit better, had to get that off our chest. Next season, why don’t the Wildcats give CBS no way out by making it to the Final Four or better yet, win the Championship!
