Former Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar has a knack for getting commits from the top talent on the west coast.

Arizona basketball hit a home run in being able to sway Romar into being an assistant head coach after coaching the Huskies for 15 years. Romar has been able to land top talent for years.

Some names include Brandon Roy, NBA MVP candidate Isiah Thomas, a lottery pick for the Suns last year Marques Chriss, potential No. 1 pick this year Markelle Fultz. Also next year’s No. 1 player Michael Porter Jr. (who de-committed from WA after Romar was fired). Bottom line the man can flat-out recruit top talent.

More from Wildcats Basketball

When the first rumors circulated about Romar even being a possibility as our replacement for Joe Pasternack, I, like the rest of us thought it was a crazy idea and would never happen.

Romar was a very successful head coach for the Washington Huskies, who compete in the conference of champions. It sounded too good to be true because one would think he would become a head coach somewhere or work on camera till a head coaching job came his way.

Coach Romar is a very creative offensive coach, something the Wildcats have lacked at times. Miller’s defensive mind, mirrored with Romar’s offensive strategy and there is a Final 4 in the very near future, hopefully, next year.

Putting together a full 4o minute game offensively and defensively should become a nightly occurrence with Romar added to an already outstanding coaching staff.

Most people assumed he would become a head coach somewhere or work on camera till a head coaching opportunity came his way. Sean Miller is also a heck of a recruiter of coaches. Having Lorenzo Romar by his side will help offensively and he will bring in top west coast talent with his relentless recruiting.

“His dedication to his players, passion for this game and impeccable character is what everybody that knows him loves about him.” -Coach Miller via ArizonaWildcats.com

Sean Miller, Book Richardson, and, now, Lorenzo Romar will make Arizona even scarier. Romar has deep west coast ties and will pull the best talent, while Book and Sean have roots out east and will continue to pull top talent from cross-country.  Miller and Romar have the same values in terms of relationships with recruits and basketball philosophy, a match made in heaven. Miller had nice things to say about Romar as reported by ArizonaWildcats.com.

While at Washington, Coach Romar was a very successful and his players loved him. The Wildcats have gone through stretches of stagnant offensive sequences. Putting together a full 4o minute game offensively and defensively should become a nightly occurrence with Romar added to an already outstanding coaching staff.

Arizona basketball has never been competing at a higher level if only we can find away to break past the elite 8. A coaching change-up, the addition of Romar might be the solution.
