Spain Game 2: Arizona Basketball beats Mataro All-Stars decisively 99-74
Game 2 for the Arizona Basketball team was a little more exciting and challenging than Sunday’s Game 1, but the Wildcats pulled out a decisive win.
The Arizona Basketball team and coaches have been exploring Barcelona Spain for the last couple of days, going to an Olympics site, taking in a Segway tour and visiting a beautiful cathedral with tons of stain glass windows. But today was game day, and the Cats took another win from a Spanish team. They are 2-0 on this trip so far.
What we didn’t want to see was injured Wildcats. Hopefully, none of the injuries suffered are too serious.

First half Notes:
- Rawle Alkins, as reported by Bruce Pascoe, did not play due to a strained left shoulder, we hope he feels better, he did take part in in warmups
- Mataro All-Stars much stronger team than the team they played on Sunday, can shoot the three
- Allonzo Trier came out guns blazing in the first quarter with two back-to-back steals for buckets and a three – first half stats: 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals
- Deandre Ayton scored ten points, all in the paint, a few big dunks, exciting. He seems always to be open.
- Dusan Ristic was active on the boards once again
- Dylan Smith hit two three’s – looks like the go-to Wildcat for perimeter shooting – had four rebounds
- Cats were four for five from the free-throw line, much different showing than on Sunday
- Team scored 23 points in the first quarter, then outscored the Mataro All-Stars 32-19 in the second quarter
- PJC strong on defense, steals, and he pressed a bit (Coach Romar influence maybe?)
- Refs still called traveling on dunks, shaking my head, Miller got onto the court to argue this time, especially because the team was only up by three points at one point

Second Half Notes:
- Miller’s team played defense in the second half on his side of the court…not offense like he usual in McKale.
- Ayton and Zo continued dominance on offense, Dusan on defense
- Allonzo made a huge dunk that no one saw coming
- Referee’s continued to call traveling
- Mataro scored their first points with 7:07 left in the third quarter (two free-throws)
- Keanu Pinder grabbed three rebounds in his time in the third quarter
- Arizona went on two 8-0 runs and one 7-0 run in second half
- Ira Lee got a few dunks in, from some great passes by PJC and Zo
- Brandon Randolph (Dolph) got his slam dunk in at the end of the third quarter
- Wildcats pulled away 84-54 in the third quarter after outscoring Mataro 29-15
- Announcers kept saying that it was a good time to get everyone in the game for the Wildcats because the team was up by 30, but they don’t know Miller, he always reserves that time as the last minute or 30 seconds
- Mataro scored three 3-pointers and an FG in a row on an 11-0 run until Lee Time slammed home a dunk
- Dylan Smith played a bit of point guard
- Emmanuel Akot had ice on his knee and didn’t play in the fourth quarter
- Miller put in Kory Jones with 1:07 left (we called it!) but he went down hurt after passing, his ankle it looked like, could not walk, needed lots of help, couldn’t put weight on it at all
- Jake Desjardins replaced Kory
- Arizona went 7-8 on their free-throws (87.5%) – consider this a huge correction from Sunday
- Team did not break 100 but won 99-74
The Arizona Basketball team continues to impress, here are the loose stats we kept, no promises they are correct, we are waiting for the final stats to be reported.
