That roar coming from the Tucson Convention Center this past weekend wasn’t from a concert or other sporting event, it was from the Arizona Wildcat hockey game. In their opening weekend, they put on quite a show for fans. First against Grand Canyon University and then against state rival Arizona State Scumdevils!
Just what the doctor ordered! It’s safe to say that Wildcat basketball has been the No.1 sport in Tucson, AZ for quite some time now, but with a lot of unknowns still to be determined, fans are looking to cheer their Wildcats on – whether it’s on the ice or on the hardwood floor. With the Arizona State Sun Devils in town, fans made sure they made their voices heard Saturday night.
Arizona Wildcats vs Grand Canyon University – Game One
The first game of the season was on Friday night against Grand Canyon University. This would be the first time both teams would have met, making it a special moment for each when the puck dropped.
Wildcats took control of the game early in the first period with a power-play goal by defencemen Manny Rowe – what a sweet looking touch!
After that goal, the Wildcats were able to put another into the net, before Grand Canyon University tied it up 2-2 late in the second period. In the third period, it was all Wildcats, scoring three goals. They ended up winning the game 5-3!
Arizona Wildcats vs Arizona State Sun Devils – Game Two
Rivalry time! The school from up north always brings out the best in both teams. Whether it’s in basketball, football, softball, baseball or hockey, it does not matter. This matchup always provides lots of excitement and energy from fans and players – this game did not disappoint!
There were fights, goals and exciting moments that express what this rivalry is all about. The Wildcats got down earlier in this one, but not for long as their captain, Forward Orion Olson, tied it up (play ended up getting reviewed, but was determined as a goal). Then the first fight of the game occurred as a result of the Wildcats celebrating their first goal – those Scumdevils must have been crying or something?!
After that fight, both teams ended up scoring one more goal before the end of the period. Both teams continued their aggressive style and attacking play into the second period. Max Myer put the Wildcats ahead 3-2 early in the period, and then the Devils tied it up shortly after on a power play. Then there were elbows, high sticking and interference penalties called on both teams, which lead to a two-man advantage for the Devils. The Wildcats were able to kill off the power play, and used that momentum to score two goals back to back to take a 5-3 lead and never looked back!
Check out this goal by Wildcat forward Josh Larsen – on one knee!
In the third period, the Wildcats ended up scoring three more goals and won the game 8-4 over the Scumdevils! Fans enjoyed the outcome:
