“Throw it down, big man!” That is what Chance Comanche, aka The Chief, has been doing for the Memphis Hustle in the NBA G-League. Going undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft, Comanche has put in a lot of work on and off the court to put himself into the position he is in now. The way Comanche has been playing of late, he deserves a two-way contract and plays for the Memphis Grizzlies.
As a Wildcat, Comanche had a lot of “throw downs,” and on the next level, it hasn’t been any different. Currently playing alongside former teammate Kobi Simmons, who is on a 2-way contract, Comanche has displayed his awareness around the rim, grabbing rebounds and making sure the ball goes through the basket with AUTHORITY!
Comanche has played in 28 games for the Hustle and is averaging 15.4 minutes per game. He also has scored in double-digit points in 11 of those games and had two double-doubles.
For the season, Comanche is averaging 9.25 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. That’s because he didn’t start the season as a starter, he has just become more of a rising star on the team.
The one stat that really stands out is his field goal percentage, which is at 61.4% which puts him at No.7 among the top field goal percentage shooters in the G-League. Must be all those dunks down low! But don’t be mistaken, Comanche has a jump shot and a sweet three, just Miller never really encouraged him to take that shot (remember his reaction to Dusan’s three against Utah?).
Late last month, Comanche scored a season-high 33 points, which ties a Hustle record. In the previous four games he has played, Comanche has averaged 19 points per game. Stats like these are just one of the many reasons why he deserves a shot at the next level. His versatility and size around the rim make Comanche a valuable addition to any NBA roster.
Against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Comanche helped his team secure the victory in overtime. Watch the full highlights of The Chief:
The way Comanche is playing now is just a matter of time before he gets his opportunity to shine on the big stage. It goes to show that if you put in that hard work and take advantage of the opportunity given, great things can happen. At some point a team may decide to sign Comanche to a 10-day contract in the NBA or next season, sign him to a two-way contract or a contract.
