Dominated! Just like Arizona Wildcats did in the regular season by winning the Pac-12 regular season title with their superior play, they came away with the most awards during the Pac-12 All-Conference awards – eight! Should call these awards the Pac-12 All-Wildcats Awards!
Deandre Ayton, Allonzo Trier, Dusan Ristic and Rawle Alkins were all winners of the All-Conference Awards. These four, including Parker Jackson-Cartwright (who didn’t get recognized, but should have), consistently performed at a high level each game and more than deserved their recognition.
Even though no other Wildcats were awarded, if there was an award for the team that overcame the most adversity it would be our Wildcats!
Here are the winners, starting with the Pac-12 All-Conference teams:
Pac-12 All-Conference First Team
These two all season long have been the Wildcats two leading scorers and stepped up during crunch team. Trier averaged 18.9 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game and 3.3 assists per game. This would be Trier’s second time winning this award – Zo wins!
He averaged 52.1% from the field, 40.4 from 3pt range and 85.6 from the free throw line. Ayton’s stats as a freshman were GODLY! He averaged 19.9 points per game, 11.4 rebounds per game and 1.6 assists per game.
Pac-12 All-Conference Second Team
Ristic loves Tucson! How can you not love this guy?! What he has accomplished his senior season has been incredible. As the season has gone on, his confidence has grown and so have his stats. Ristic averaged 11.9 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and was 42.9 % from beyond the arc – DUSSSSS!!
All Pac-12 Honorable Mention
Savagelife! I think we can all agree that without King Rawle returning, seeing a Pac-12 Championship this season was not in the cards. Alkins was the difference-maker this season and brought the energy all the time. He received at least three points to be named to the All-Conference Honorable mention.
Wildcat fans can agree he deserves more than honorable mention. He had to miss a total of 12 games due to foot surgery and recovery, but he still brought it! Alkins provided that much need spark on both offense and defense. He averaged 13.7 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game.
All Pac-12 Defensive Team
Not in Dre’s house! Ayton racked up another award for his defensive play this season. One of those main reasons why was his 59 blocks he had. Also, Ayton’s ability to guard around the perimeter was supreme. His footwork and agility is NBA like and will make him one of the greats to play basketball!
All Pac-12 Freshman Team
As if there was any doubt. Ayton is probably the greatest freshman to ever put on a Wildcat jersey. What he is able to do for his size and strength is unreal! If it wasn’t for the one and done rule, Ayton would have been the No.1 pick the 2017 NBA Draft.
Pac-12 Player of the Year
Ayton becomes the ninth Wildcat to win this award. Expectations were very high prior to the start of the season and he delivered. In the running for the National Player of the Year, Ayton has a very good chance earning one of the most prestigious awards in college basketball.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year
If you are counting, that makes five. Ayton becomes the third player ever in Pac-12 history to win both the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season. Kevin Love and Shareef Abdur-Rahim are the other two to accomplish this rare feat.
