Arizona Football continues to focus on improving its recruiting, as the Wildcats host four-star quarterback, Grant Gunnell.

One week after the Wildcats completed their first spring game under Kevin Sumlin, Arizona turns its focus on recruiting, as the Wildcats host four-star quarterback, Grant Gunnell.

It is no secret the Wildcats could use a little upgrade in talent, especially if they hope to reach that “next level”. Over the years, Arizona has fared okay in recruiting, but their respective rankings in comparison to the rest of the Pac-12 isn’t really earth shattering.

Blame the lack of traditions, average results or decent facilities, but recruiting also takes relationships, and simply just offering. You’ll never know if you don’t ask, and unfortunately it seems like the Wildcats under Rich Rodriguez would offer some of the nations top recruits, but wouldn’t focus on actively recruiting them.

Granted, Arizona is going to be a tough sell over USC, Alabama and Ohio State for a lot of reasons, after all, this isn’t basketball, but it’s at least important to still try.

In his first few months on the job, one thing Sumlin has shown is he’s not afraid to recruit at a high level.

While at Texas A&M, Sumlin established some great relationships, and helped the Aggies maintain some great talent. We can argue over what he was or wasn’t able to do with that talent, but nonetheless, the man showed he, and his staff could recruit.

Granted A&M is far easier to recruit to than Arizona, but the man could carry over those relationships, and perhaps the Wildcats could benefit from that. So far, it’s paying small dividends.

All you could ever ask for is a chance, and it seems the Wildcats are getting that so far. Last week, among the myriad of football players visiting Tucson, among them were four-star’s Stephon Wright, Noa Pola-Gates and five-star, Elias Ricks.

This weekend, its Grant Gunnell’s turn. The tall and sturdy quarterback from the big state of Texas takes his official visit to Tucson.

The former A&M commit is already very comfortable with members of the coaching staff, having previously committed to quarterback coach, Noel Mazzone. After Sumlin was hired, the Wildcats wasted no time in offering the talented QB!

Gunnell is currently on his visit, and as high school athletes tend to only get five official visits, this is a BIG deal!

As we have said, Gunnell is a big-time talent with a big frame and big arm. This past season at the perennially talented St. Pius X High School in Houston, TX, Gunnell threw for nearly 5,000 yards and 61 touchdowns to just six interceptions according to Maxpreps. He also added another 390 yards rushing with eight touchdowns.

The talent is there, and so are the offers. While we are not saying having Gunnell on campus gives the Wildcats a strong chance of getting his commitment, it is however, great that he’s giving us a look and utilizing his official to come here.

If he were to commit down the road, there is a lot to like about his game, just take a look!
