Arizona Baseball (23-15, 6-9) gets outmatched this past weekend in tough series versus Pac-12 foe, the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal.

Winners of 13 of their last 16 entering Friday’s game, the Arizona Baseball teams’ confidence came back down to earth after facing one of the nation’s best baseball teams.

Hoping to make a big statement in game one, the Wildcats came out swinging, but unfortunately Arizona ran out of gas, and Stanford put a inning together late in the game to steal the lead and the win.

Arizona would drop game one by an 8-2 final.

Looking to rebound in game two, Michael Flynn would get the start for Arizona. Once again the Wildcats would start fast.

With runners on, Wildcat catcher Cesar Salazar would reach base on a fielders choice, that would score Cal Stevenson, giving Arizona the 1-0 lead.

The very next inning, Stevenson would fly out to left field, allowing Ryan Haug to tag up, and score on a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0.

Stanford would eventually respond, taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but luckily, Arizona retaliated quickly, tying the game at 3-3 when Alfonso Rivas would homer to right field!

The very next inning, with runners on, freshman Jacob Blas would hit a rare, inside the park home run scoring three runs, and giving Arizona the lead yet again, this time 6-3 in favor of the Wildcats.

Unfortunately, Stanford’s potent offense  would once again rally late, adding five runs in the top of the ninth, taking the late lead, and stealing the win.

Despite the Wildcats’ great offensive performance, and solid pitching outing from Flynn, Arizona lost game two by an 8-7 final, and ultimately the series.

Hoping to avoid the sweep, Arizona went to Juan Aguilera in game three. For the third time in as many days, the Wildcat took an early lead, however, once again it was not enough.

Arizona would go up 1-0 in the second inning, when Seve Romo would single to left field, scoring Nick Quintana from third.

The Cardinal would answer in the very next inning, tying the game at 1-1. Unfortunately when Stanford would score again in the fifth inning, they would take the lead for good, securing the win and sweep of the Wildcats.

Arizona was held to just two runs on seven hits in this one, dropping the third and final game by a 7-2 final.

With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 23-15 (6-9) on the season, and fall back to seventh place in the Pac-12 standings. Luckily for Arizona, the schedule gets a little bit easier, as the Wildcats face a struggling Utah team in Salt Lake City, followed by one game in Orem, UT versus Utah Valley before returning to Tucson against UCLA the following weekend.
