After a small setback, Arizona Baseball (28-17, 10-11) has gotten back on track in a big way, sweeping No. 7 UCLA in a three-game series.

It was a tough couple of weeks for the Arizona Baseball team, as the Wildcats fell into a bit of a skid. After winning 13 of 16 games from March 20 to April 13, the Wildcats weren’t losing much.

Well, fast forward a few weeks, and things got turned around quickly. Attribute to tougher competition and having rattled confidence, Arizona then lost five of their next seven games, including five straight.

Luckily, it seems have turned around for the better.

Arizona entered Thursday’s three-game series in desperate need for some wins, especially if the Cats hope to have any postseason play in their future this year.

On Thursday, with Cody Deason on the mound, Arizona delivered in a big way! Putting together a masterful performance, the Wildcats stole game one, by a 2-0 final!

Game two was set for Friday night, with Arizona’s Michael Flynn ready to take the mound on Star Wars Night. And for the second straight evening, Arizona’s pitchers would turn in another masterful performance.

Feeling opportunistic, the Wildcats jumped on the Bruins early in game two. With runners on the corners in the first inning, Arizona’s Cameron Cannon would be set up for an ideal situation. Cannon would fly out to left field, hitting the ball deep enough to score Cal Stevenson from third, giving the Cats the 1-0 lead.

Not but a few batters later, Nick Quintana would come up to the plate with a similar chance. The big hitting, third baseman would single a ball to left field, scoring Alfonso Rivas from third, and extending the Wildcats’ lead to 2-0.

Unfortunately, not much offense would be brewing for Arizona after that, as it pretty much became a pitchers duel. UCLA would gain a run in the fifth inning off of Flynn, but that’s all the offense UCLA would muster in this one, before Flynn would eventually be pulled in the seventh.

In a position to get the win, Arizona’s relievers would shut the door on the Bruins, allowing Flynn to pick up his sixth win of the year. The Wildcats would add another run in the eighth thanks to a Bruins wild pitch.

Arizona’s Zach Stone would pick up his first save on the season also, as the Wildcats would go on to win game two by a 3-1 final, securing the series win!

Flynn would finish with 12 strikeouts while surrendering just one run on six hits.

With series already in hand, the Wildcats were hoping to bring out the brooms in game three! Juan Aguilera would get the start in this one, putting together another amazing outing by an Arizona pitcher.

For the third-straight game, Arizona would get off to a quick start. With runners on in the first inning, the Wildcats would once again score on an error by the Bruins, as Stevenson would score off of a throwing error.

The very next batter, Cesar Salazar would reach on a single that would score Cannon, giving Arizona the 2-0 lead!

However, UCLA would respond in the third, tying the game at 2-2. Luckily, Arizona would come right back, as Arizona would take the lead on a solo homer from Rivas!

Thanks to some timely hits, Arizona would add two more runs in the fourth inning, extending their lead to 5-2 in favor of the Cats.

Arizona would put this thing away for good, when Seve Romo would double to left center, scoring Donta Williams, giving the Wildcats the 6-2 lead! UCLA would get one run back in the ninth, but that would be all the offense they would muster, as Arizona paced themselves to the 6-3 victory and sweep of UCLA!

Aguilera would pick up the win, after pitching six and a third strong innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits, while striking out five, improving his record to 6-0 on the year!

The Wildcats would get great production from seemingly everyone in this one, as Arizona would score six runs on just five hits.

Arizona will return to action Tuesday evening when they take on in-state rival, Grand Canyon at Hi Corbett Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
