A tradition that has long been around since the late 19th, early 20th century, anyone interested in attending in person, adorns their fanciest attire, ready to take in the spectacle. The series of races last from the first week in May, until the first week in June.
Over the past few years, Arizona Alum Bob Baffert has become a household name in the sport of horse racing. A famed horse trainer from the great state of Arizona, Baffert grew up in Nogales, AZ on a ranch.
He would attend the University of Arizona, graduating from the Race Track Industry Program. Baffert would then go on to become one of the most famed trainers in the world!
His career in the American Classic races began in 1996, and in that time, he’s amassed over 2800 wins in his career in the sport, which includes International Races. His most famous series of wins coming in 2015 with American Pharaoh.
American Pharaoh, a bay colt from a strong lineage of racers made history in 2015, when the horse won all three American races, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, becoming just the 12th in history to do it!
Well on Saturday, Baffert again had a chance to win his second Triple Crown. This time on the legs of Justify.
An American Thoroughbred, Justify did the unthinkable, overcoming rough conditions to win the Kentucky Derby as a three-year old horse.
Weeks later, we would witness yet another remarkable race. Once again in extremely rough and rainy conditions in Baltimore, MD, Justify would make a great break to obtain the early lead, and held on for the close victory!
Advance to this past Saturday, history would be at stake. Entering the race with 4/5 odds to win, could Justify become the 13th horse in history to become a Triple Crown winner?
Justify would break well again, taking the lead along the inside rails. The horse would open up a two-length lead around the mile mark and would cruise to a victory, interestingly enough, finishing 1 and 3/4 length ahead of Gronkowski, named after another Arizona Alum Rob Gronkowski who is a part-owner in the horse.
The win immortalized Justify, as he becomes just the 13th horse to win, as well as Baffert who becomes the second trainer to win two, Triple Crowns!
