Arizona Football star Anthony Pandy MVP of best game yet this season
Anthony Pandy showed his skills and versatility versus USC on Saturday night, and Arizona Football stayed in the game because of him.
The Arizona Football 2021 season has been a struggle for all involved including the fans, the players, coaches, and media. It’s hard to cheer for, report on, support, lead and play for a team that has lost 20 games over the past three seasons from 2019-21. However, Anthony Pandy changed that for so many of us on Saturday night.
Granted, the Wildcats lost to the Trojans, but it was a competitive effort as the Wildcats lost by a touchdown and it even came down to the waning moments. You would think the team would be down, but is seemingly getting better every game, and so is Pandy.
Just read what Dorian Singer Tweeted days ago, and it renews our hope for the future of Arizona Football. “Wouldn’t rather be no place but here. Count us out if you want, this is just the beginning,” Tweeted Singer.
Singer is a walk-on wide receiver who played his first game on Oct. 30th and caught three passes for 65 yards. Looks like Singer may be getting a scholarship soon, as head coach Jedd Fish alluded to during his post-game press conference, “We’re going to see a lot more of Dorian Singer in the next four years, going to have to figure out how to get him a scholarship ASAP!”
Anthony Pandy showed his skills and versatility versus USC on Saturday night, and there is only more to come. He’s one of the leaders of Arizona Football, and his play gets the team hyped up.
I was told by Dana Cooper of Learfield IMG that he frequently also sees Jerry Roberts and Jamarye Joiner hype up the team during games.
In addition to Singer’s debut, the Wildcats scored 34 points against USC. They were able to break the 20-point total or more barrier in a game since the loss to Washington last November 21st. Arizona lost 44-27.
Things are looking up, there is no denying it. The Wildcats came close so many times to tying the Trojans during the game at the historical Los Angeles Colosseum. A few positives from the game included a steady improvement at the quarterback position as Will Plummer seemed to be able to read the defense and adjust. He even ran in a touchdown.
That said, the most exciting player who seemed to be all over the field giving it his all, was Pandy. Pandy not only intercepted the ball and ran 37 yards for a pick-six, but he also was integral to a successful trick play, by keeping the ball in a punt formation on fourth down and running for 32 yards for a first down. Asked if he had ever rushed the ball, Pandy said, “Never, [but] in practice [ha ha] .. we’ve had it [the play] all season.”
Add to that six total tackles, three of them solo. Pandy ranks No. 7 in the Pac-12 with 60 total tackles.
Pandy’s former teammate Khalil Tate came to the game to support the team and according to Pandy, they two got to say hello, “Of course, that’s my boy since we were little.” Pandy had 16 friends and family at the game. From the broadcast booth, we heard UofA Chants all game long from the family section put way past the end zone. Only half the stadium was filled and USC still stuck the Arizona fans away from the field, go figure.
The Harbor City California native who graduated from powerhouse Narbonne High School had something to prove to himself, his family, and his hometown against USC. Pandy had offers from Arizona and Washington State but had no other Pac-12 offers locally from USC or UCLA. Bet the Trojans had wished they had recruited Anthony now.
On the pick-six play, Pandy had been watching the offense. He noticed the Trojans had been playing in the double-slant multiple times so he read the QB’s pass, “It felt really good to be in my hometown at the coliseum, a lot of my family is here so it’s good to know that I just made the play and for my team.”
Coach Fisch had nothing but great things to say about his linebacker, including how much he loves the kids, “Proud of Anthony Pandy as always. I mean that kid just, I mean I tell him after every game I love him,” gushed Fisch in the post-game press conference, “I tell him I love him as much as I tell my wife. That guy just gives everything, every day at practice.” [1:00 mark]
We can’t wait to see what the game of football has next for Anthony, but it is looking like the sky’s the limit! He’s a winner that’s for sure!
