ESPN Host Colin Cowherd Latest in ESPN Exodus
Controversial sportscaster Colin Cowherd, the host of the sports talk radio and TV Show “The Herd,” built up his large listener base and popularity substantially in the last 10+ years working for ESPN. He’s moving on.
As reported by Bleacher Report, For The Win (USA Today Sports), The Big Lead, DeadSpin and others, “The Herd” which airs on ESPN Radio and ESPNU, is in talks with Fox Sports.
ESPN announced the parting Thursday in a statement issued by ESPN President John Skipper:
"“We’ve enjoyed a mutually beneficial run with Colin for over a decade. He came to national prominence on ESPN with his unique perspective on sports and society. Endings also bring new beginnings, for ESPN and Colin, and we thank him and wish him the best.”"
ESPN also recently did not renew contracts for Bill Simmons and Keith Olbermann who recently left the ESPN Umbrella. Looks like ESPN feels it’s time for new and possibly cheaper but motivated talent.
According to Ryan Glasspiegel of The Big Lead this move is not what ESPN executives wanted:
"“The timing will leave a gaping hole in ESPN Radio’s weekday lineup and has broader implications about where some things are going both in Bristol — few will forget the great talent exodus of 2015 at ESPN, which has seen the network lose other outspoken voices in Bill Simmons and Keith Olbermann — and in general sports media. The difference here was that ESPN did make an aggressive bid to keep Cowherd, but was upstaged by Fox, who are clearly looking to make a big splash.”"
Cowherd is now reuniting with the President of Fox, Jamie Horowitz, who worked with Cowherd on SportsNation at ESPN in which he had female co-hosts on ESPN2 with Michelle Beadle and later Charissa Thompson.
Colin Cowherd, (born January 6, 1962), has been called many things. He’s been called controversial, he’s been called a prominent national voice, and Deadspin’s Samer Kalaf even called him “Notable smegma man.”
Arizona Wildcats
A frequent Pac-12 supporter, Colin was born in the state of Washington so he is one of very few “West-Coast” biased sports broadcasters. If he works for Fox Sports, I am assuming he gets to move back to the West Coast and the city of Los Angeles which he covets as you can tell when he speaks about the Lakers, and the city itself. He would be moving from Connecticut where ESPN is headquartered.
I seem to remember just a day ago he went on and on about the fact that he married both of his wives because they liked adventure and moving from city to city. Seems he was preparing us for this news.
Colin is also is extremely well read and often in his broadcasts educates folks who are “ignorant” about the ways of the world; there are a lot of dumb and ignorant people in this country according to Cowherd.
Just this morning he was educating everyone on the validity of Twitter reactions to Catlyn Jenner. He basically said that most people complaining about Caitlyn getting the Arthur Ashe ESPY Courage Award were also people unhappy with their lives in general, so they were unhappy with politicians, their next door neighbor, their boss, their ex-wife, and the list went on.

He then moves forward explaining how everyone should be able to love whomever they want and that he just got back from San Fransisco which is one of the most advanced cities in North America and he thoroughly enjoys the city. So “deal with it” is his motto and “get with the 21st century.”
His show revolves predominantly about sports, but he weaves in politics and social issues, and he craftily puts it all together in his monologues.
I don’t know if I wish him the best of luck, I might miss his new show though, pretty much stuck on ESPN stations 83-87 on XM radio each morning and night, would have to not be lazy and find the Fox Sports channel.
What I do hope is that he continues to give the West coast and the Pac-12 the attention it so deserves because it’s about time! Especially the University of Arizona!
