On Monday, Sean Miller and the Arizona Basketball team offered Majok Deng, the local Tucson high school product from Salpointe Catholic.
Arizona Basketball Coach Sean Miller finally decided to go ahead and offer Majok Deng who still is more than two years from graduating from Salpointe High School in Tucson Arizona. The talented small forward who originally hails from Sudan in Africa is ranked fourth in the West among top 2019 basketball recruits by ESPN in the recruiting class of 2019.
Deng has had quite the interesting journey. Having fled from the war-stricken country of Sudan at a young age, Deng and his family would settle in Kenya.
After years of waiting amidst the turmoil, Deng, his mom, and three brothers would finally receive their opportunity to escape the chaos.
Unfortunately, Deng’s mother had to make a tough choice, choosing to leave her husband and Majok’s father behind, who was still fighting in the war.

His father remains in Kenya, having now started a school, helping children.
With not much money, and still learning English, Deng, and his family finally arrived in Tucson in 2011.
Since arriving in the US, Majok and his family have been adjusting, getting acclimated to the American way of life.
Deng’s mom works hard to support the family, and Majok keeps busy, working hard in the gym to better his basketball game.
Apparently, as the cousin of NBA star Luol Deng, athleticism runs in the family. Majok’s older brother was a standout long-distance runner while at Cholla High School.
Deng, currently a sophomore at Salpointe High School, has been making quite the name for himself and is easily one of the best basketball players to come out of Tucson in quite some time. With that, Miller and the Wildcats finally offered Deng on Monday night.
With the offer from Arizona, Deng also holds offers from Utah, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and ASU among others.
Deng has a long way to go before he would make a decision, but he certainly would be a good addition for a number of reasons, and it’s always important to keep the best talent in-state.
Just from his highlight tape, you can see how Deng is oozing with talent:
